After having sen the first half of the germany Australia game, the germany team looks real strong and commanding. If they can keep this up against stronger teams, I will call them favourites to win the cup.

They play the best foofball I have seen so far.

They will not be banned. They may not have a long tradition if S.A., but they are certainly part of the game now....and they're kind a growing on me.

I think Australia sucked..thats it. No defense no offense. Germany is good , but lets see them a gainst a more powerful team.

Bingo!!

The Germans are good no doubt but Australia's offside trap was weak and out of sync.
Good point David! I think the first German goal was offside. I hope they lose cos I don't like Sepp Blatter who is german of course and always seems to favour them.

This is the first and hopefully the last major football tournament that South Africa hosts, I am so tired of that annoying sound, and the claim that its part of South African culture is insane. Where is the superb African singing, the Dutch brass band, the South American drums and the English singing "Rule Britannia!!!

2014 and the wonderful Brazilian samba music cant come fast enough IMO.
So it is not being played over the PA system. Fans are actually doing it.
I would think they get tired of making that stupid noise after awhile.

I liked the video, of course except for the buzzing.

Here
OH, WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a show by the North Koreans... David kept Goliath at bay for an hour... and with a bit more offense could have pulled off the upset of the past 100 years!

Their defense was outstanding... two and sometimes three defenders marking whichever Brazilian had the ball... these guys must be in marvelous physical condition if they could do that and still plug the holes they had to leave open to do it.

If they play like that against Portugal the Portuguese have no chance... and neither, probably, will the Ivory Coast.

North Koreans may well grab second spot in this group... wouldn't that be something!

I am tired of that sound as well. Now I know what that sound was when I was watching some of the Canadian qualifying games in Central America. I seriously thought something was wrong with the audio telecast from those places!!

But I just wanted to note... no matter what FIFA says... this is NOT South African culture. It is African culture. And the two are NOT the same. It's like Internationals blaming Canadians for being American because of proximity and likeness. South Africa has enough problems with crime, a corrupt government and an anti-apartheid system that is anything but equal. Don't banish them with the annoying Vu-horn as well!! The word AFRICA is being used simply because it's a continental World Cup. It's probably one of the few times the country (South Africa) and the continent (Africa) have all come together, as one.

But damn those horns... give me singing, any day.

They should move a few steps up from no 105 on FIFA's rating list by this feat alone. few teams can beat them if they can keep playing this good.

It was also impressive, that the north Koreans played very cleanly, in contrast to the portugese and italiens, who used every opportunity to stamp and kick the opponents.

It's so good to see soccer fans nowadays are starting to appreciate good tactically defensive football as in North Korea's approach. I remember a few years back Barcelona dubbed the organized defensive approach of Guus Hiddink's Chelsea "anti-football". And look at the staunch defense of Mourinho's Champions League winning Inter this year and see how they stifled the attacks from the offensive-minded Barcelona and Bayern. It really forces the best players of the opposing team to produce a moment of magic like Maicon did, well, CR7 came close hitting the woodwork. Whether or not this defensive approach will be the trend for this World Cup, I still hope for a more balanced offense/defense tournament.

So I check out FIFA's website because I always wonder how they choose the teams. How many regions there are, how many teams from each region, etc.
There are six very unbalanced regions and talk about weighted in Europe's favor and South America, you have/had a 50/50 chance of making it to the World Cup tournament. I found out, and correct me if I am wrong, but, FIFA decides how many teams advance from each region for each tourney every four years. In other words, for this 2010 event there are five South American teams, but next time in 2014 there may be more or less.
Does this sit well with soccer fans ?

Well, it really depends on who you talk to. But regardless, how well teams from each region (confederation) do in the World Cup will be taken into considerations for future qualification spots. Each confederation has to earn its extra spots in future qualifications at the expense of others, so to speak. Take our region CONCACAF for example, our results in this World Cup so far are 2 ties (US and Mexico) and 1 defeat (Honduras), not so good so far.

FIFA's decision is based on a formula built around the strength and size of each region. Technically South America has 4.5 teams and our region CONCCACAF has 3.5 teams (5th place in SA plays 4th place in our region in a playoff). Overall it seems fair to me, there are some very good teams in Europe (Croatia, Russia etc.) and SA (Ecuador, Columbia) that didn't qualify. If qualifications were not done on a regional basis it would be comprised of almost all European and SA teams.

Good question, personally I do not think it is fair. There are too many European teams and it weighs in there favour. FIFA although being the governing body is based in Europe and tends to favour Europe(Germany,France especially). I think the sport loses credibility by not having video replay, which Sepp Blatter (FiFA President) said months ago would not be ready in time.
I could bore you with some examples from the past, but I will leave it at that.

I hope soccer never will have video replay. Some of the appealing features of soccer is that there are no stoppages (commercials) and that everybody, even the superstars that makes 50 millions, still consider it a "sporting game" where players and referes alike are sometimes making mistakes. That is part of the game.

Video replay would have clearly seen Henry handle the ball in the important qualifying game against Ireland. Unfortunately, we have to suffer watching the french in this tournament. That is one recent example, I could cite many. Football is somewhat fixed and video replay would take that away.
