Two yesterday by Japan, one today by Spain. And two or three others that I can't remember right now...

I have watched most of the matches and I have seen a lot of bend...

I do seem to becoming a fan more and more with every World Cup. I have to admit I have never sat and watched so much as I have this year.
This leads to some questions/suggestions I would like to put forth to the more knowledgeable soccer fans. Remember though I am a rookie fan, sort of speak, and my main goal(as always) is to get Canada more glory.

What do you think of this idea ?

I found out that Australia, which is located in the Oceanic region, competes for World Cup births via the Asia region. They just switched regions.

If a country can leave their 'home' region and go to another region(for whatever reason) to compete for WC births then I think Canada should go and join the Oceanic group for an easier path to WC tourney entries. Even if it is only for six or eight years. Enough to take two runs at a WC spot. It may inspire interest of soccer in Canada. Kids would see Canada(hopefully) at the WC and maybe would want to stay in soccer and play for Canada.
Now I do not know what is involved in switching regions, but I think if FIFA would like to grow the game in NA this would be a good way to do it.

Whether or not the above is a good idea, I think that FIFA's formula for countries gaining entry to the WC must be overhauled.
First I think the top ranked teams should get an automatic birth. #1-10.
The next group of countries ranked #11-20 should have to pass a series of preWC games just to make sure they are still top 20 teams.
The final 12 spots can be earned by teams that play in a preWC(for 32 or 40 countries, ranked #21 or lower) the year before the actual WC. Eight groups of four or five teams. Only the group winners advance and the winners also earn entry into the WC.
The last four(three when a country such as South Africa hosts) spots can go to countries win some preWC round robin games.

Canada is ranked 63rd.
New Zealand, the only Oceanic country to gain entry, is ranked 83rd.
North Korea is ranked 105th.

Another question I have is ...
Could Canada ever host a WC ?
I asked one of my soccer friends(he is a Scot) and he told me there are not enough stadiums in Canada.
Since a recent WC was co-hosted by Korea and Japan, why not allow Canada to host and USA to co-host ?

Talking about nice goals. How about the Uruguay player's bend today ? Even I said "Wow !".

Wanted to add. I think it was a Brazil goal during the first round. Player squeezes it between the post and the goalkeeper.

The technology exists ... use it !

Fuckin' soccer dinosaurs.

It is 2010, the 21st century

Ball was clearly in, England gets ripped off. Otherwise that was one of the best halves of soccer I have ever seen. More games like that and I will become a fan.

I am happy for Germany, one of my favorites.

I could tell it was a goal even before the replay. I know its a tough call but one of the referee or linesman must have been able to see the ball bounced back off the crossbar. That said the German strikers are fucking lethal. Totally schooled the England D in first half. They deserve to be up.

Well, turns out the disallowed goal was not decisive anyway. German speed on the fast counter attack produced 4 goals and the England defence had no solution. (Call it "Blitzkrieg Fussball" perhaps.) Seems like England have to tune up their back 4 for the next Euro.

What a display by Germany... a blitzkrieg just too much for England.

Looks like we will be seeing next Saturday at the quarter finals what might have been a great final match if Argentina beats Mexico later today. And that will be a great game between the cream of Europe and the cream of Latin America,

It's better to go out to a powerhouse like Germany than to bow out heinously to a minnow like Slovakia.

Is that something like "Better to die on your feet than to live on your knees"?

BTW, that was coined by Emiliano Zapata not some rock group.

I agree with Capt. If the goal was counted it would have been a different game. England would have started the second half tied, and that makes a big difference. Maybe this helps England in the long run as hopefully they will get younger for the next WC.

Is Rooney overrated ?

It's gonna be Germany vs Argentina

I don't really see Mexico winning.
I agree 100%... but soccer matches are a game in which you don't count your chickens before they hatch. ;)

Not true. The disallowed goal caused England to open up, leaving them vulnerable to Germany's great counter attack.
I thought about that point before posting. While one can never say what would have happened if an incident had taken place differently, the Germans were exposing England's defence brutally right from the start of the game. My feeling is that they would have taken the lead again anyway. If the disallowed goal had been a go-ahead score, then England could have concentrated on defence and in that case, maybe it would have been a decisive game-changer.

Enough of an answer for me.
Well there was a balding, pissed off looking guy playing for England. Sure looked like him.

Si Signor, but I'm not feeling tragic like I'm Marlon Brando. I'm just pissed.

It's not Rooney's fault, the Germans played to England's weakness - they have no defensive midfielders. Possibly, if Owen Hargreaves weren't so brittle the outcome could have been different. Germany's defense isn't that impressive, Manuel Neuer is no Ollie Kahn.
