I thought about that point before posting. While one can never say what would have happened if an incident had taken place differently, the Germans were exposing England's defence brutally right from the start of the game. My feeling is that they would have taken the lead again anyway. If the disallowed goal had been a go-ahead score, then England could have concentrated on defence and in that case, maybe it would have been a decisive game-changer.
I agree that ze Germans were the better team and probably would have won anyway, but the disallowed goal totally changed the complexion of the match and really took the wind out of England's sails and made what should/would have been a close match into a laugher.

England should be ashamed. This German team is not a great team, but England made them look great.

You don't respond to being robbed of a goal in the first half by coming out and lying down to in the 2nd. I feel sorry for long suffering English fans who deserved to see their side at least try. The players disgraced their shirt today.

Games like the Netherlands and Slovakia that we just saw make it difficult argue with those who say the game is boring!

OTOH, Brazil and Chile should be a great game... though I think Brazil is just too much for Chile, especially with so many of Chile's first line defenders having to sit out this one.

But I always cheer for the underdog!

As always, we shall see what we shall see!

Do you think one of the problems with England is that they have a coach named Fabio, lol.

The best thing Germany has going for them is ball possession. They believe in short, crisp passes and absolutely hate giving up the ball. I think Fabio tried to reign in the English long pass, all over the place style play with some success, but the English started to do those long, crazy passes again in the game against Germany. It makes for entertaining viewing, but it is deadly against a very tactical German team.
Plus I think the English defence was asleep yesterday.

Also, I think it's great that the best German players are not really German, lol. It's just a testament to how Germany's face is changing, for the better culturally, I think.

And OTOH, matches like the one between Brazil and Chile makes it very difficult for those who say soccer is boring to argue with us! ;)

Si Signor, but I'm not feeling tragic like I'm Marlon Brando. I'm just pissed.
I take it more of an elegant tribute, a la Bowie, rather than tongue-in-cheek a la Osterberg?

You, Sen'or Von, are Leonardo's Notebook!

As per tomorrow, mi Espan'a takes on CR7 and his crew. One way or another there's going to be a lot of dead fish.

They'll mostly end up in paella all over the little bistros of las Ramblas.

If you watch soccer a lot you know that one goal change the complication of the match. I'm not going to be as naive as to say England would have won. The Germans destroyed our back four. But that goal should have stayed and it could have changed the entire match.
I've watched countless soccer games to know that you are absultely right on that point. Teams 1 or even 2 down, get back into games, steal a bit of momentum and the game can change shape completely as the other side panicks and/or retreats. Can you imaging the panick in the German side if England had been awarded 2 goals in the space of 2 minutes, as they should have been.

Having said that, they were rubish as a team and would probably have found a way of losing. Would have been a different game though.

The big question has to be how a team of that supposed high standard could end up playing so badly in every game? I don't believe it's because they were over-rated. They had done very well in qualifying and in various friendlies. Not sure the manager is to blame but he didn't always make the right decisions. Very strange.

Round of 16:

Paraguay vs. Japan - 29 Jun 10:00am (ET)
Spain vs. Portugal - 29 Jun 2:30pm (ET)

Quarter-finals:

Netherlands vs. Brazil - 2 Jul 10:00am (ET)
Uruguay vs. Ghana - 2 Jul 2:30pm (ET)
Argentina vs. Germany - 3 Jul 10:00am (ET)
TBD vs. TBD - 3 Jul 2:30pm (ET)

I think Paraguay vs Spain will be the fourth game of the quarters.

Unbelievable!

The Argie ref allows Capdevilla to foul CRon all night then red cards the Portuguese defender. Capdevilla should have gone off for diving.

Ce disgrazia!

England was soundily beaten by the Germans, the disallowed goal made no difference on the game. England had no defence and allowed some soft goals. To make matters worse Germany turned off the gas after the fourth and showed them some mercy. Beckenbauer was even mocking England early in the tournament, it would have been nice if they had some bottle and were able to shut him up. Sadly though, Germany were never going to lose that game. Ozil, Mueller and Schweinsteiger are young, gifted and fast. I actually fancy Germany now over my tournament favourite Argentina.

Capello is clueless, why bring on Heskey in an important game like that.! Yesterday I watched a struggling Torres for Spain get subbed off, why didn't Capello have the balls to sub Lampard or even Rooney. Today, I read that Rooney had booked his summer holiday two days before the Germany game. WTF England was in a weak group and still could not even finish top. They were lucky and should have gone home with France & Italy.

I agreed with pretty much else you had to say. Disagree strongly with that particular point and that's based on watching hundreds if not thousands of games, this side of the pond. Momentum is often everything in a game and 2 quick goals by England would have caused Germany to play differently and raised England's game. I would however had agreed with you if you had said that England would have found a way of losing anyway.

Some debate over here about the strengths of the German game being based on a different set-up to the English league, where the number of foreign nationals playing for each team is strictly limited. Interesting also to note that not a single German in the team that day played outside their home league.

As you know, Sergio Ramos is the right-back for Real Madrid and I'm a devoted Barca Cul'e. So long as Ramos does his job for the La Furia Roja, I will keep my comments to a discreet level of support.

As for the acne on his back, it's either the stress his girlfriend gives him or puberty. One way or another, he'll grow out of it!
