They will be legislated back to work, they will be declared an essential service, and I do not believe that any arbitrator with the sense that God gave a cabbage will give them a deal worth anything like what they just turned down.
It will be interesting to see if Miller asks the province to have them declared an essential service, somehow I doubt it.
Never doubt the "sense" of any arbitrator, you never know how he/she may rule. It will be interesting to see if the arbitrator tires to "send a message" - not likely but it would be refreshing.

I can't wait for the province to amalgamate all of the different transit authorities in the GTA and outsource operations & maintenance.

The day is coming.

This is a huge issue that Toronto faces when it comes to tourism in Toronto. The few faces they come into contact with throughout their stay are never pleasant or helpful. Rude and obviously clueless is what they are left with. Who would want to come back? I wouldn't. I would spend the money in a place where they really wanted it. I have been to places where they went above and beyond their job description to make sure I left with a smile on my face and a happy memory. Most people will always remember the worst times they have had and that being said they would probably remember their whole trip to Toronto and tell all their friends never to come here.
I enjoy going to Vegas to relax( believe it or not) down there they know that customer service is what pays their bills and it shows. Smiles everywhere generally helpful .

The difference is extreamly noticable between toronto and vegas.

Just got in, it's a zoo downtown, especially around the ex. Bumper to bumper, I don't think all routes are up to speed yet. Damn, I got stuck in a bit of a gridlock.

Bloody greedy, inconsiderate, coddled and ungrateful unionists. They should try working in the private sector where they have to compete for their jobs or compete against the Indians and Chinese. These TTC workers make more money than 95% of their passengers. They think the public exists to serve them and not the other way around.

Between a rock and a hard place
Despite the fact that they want an unfair wage that exceeds comparable wages in the market. Despite the fact that they thumbed their nose at us with less than 2 hours notice. Despite my family's desperate need for public transit. I support their right to strike as long as they want to.

They have a known safety issue, albeit they are crying wolf. It's their card and they are playing it. Fair and square. No authority should be allowed to legislate people back to an unsafe workplace.

So despite the Union bullshit, the workers are right and the government is wrong. But what else is new?

They got the wages they asked for and they obliterated the two-tiered wage regime. Those were the real issues they were tabling after all. Management tried to pull a fast one with the contractors issue. Bad idea. Now they need to cave. That's all.

They are not picketing ? The UAW requires workers to picket everyday in order to receive strike pay-which is only about half of reg. pay. The TTC workers should be outside picketing, thats for sure.-I think they should have waited a week for a new contract to be written.

As for unions in general...

How I see it, is theres not ENOUGH unions. Thats why some workers with a college degree don't earn as much pay-they are getting screwed because they don't have a union.

Don't get mad at the union workers, get upset that more workers don't demand unions to represent them.
You have a point there.

I've never disagreed with unions, however, in the TTC case, they have a very fair offer on the table, now stop fucking around.

AS far as I am aware, there's never EVER been a lay off at the TTC, so these guys are worried over the impossible.

When I moved here 3 years ago, I was shocked about the 9am sunday thing. I mean that would be ok back in the 70's, when most things were actually closed on "the day of our lord"*

Why is the TTC not classified as an essential service in the busiest metropolitan in Canada, is mindboggling to me.
Don't forget that Sunday morning from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. is one of the only times that you can get any continuous time to work on the subway infrastructure. During the week, it's like 3 a.m. to 5 a.m. Hardly productive.

It's very very costly as a result to work on the subway.

Good too see that Queen's Park actually go something done and ordered them back to work.

What I'm really interested to see is what happens with the leadership of the union. I'd say that the actions of their members in turning down an offer that they union executive endorsed is a pretty strong vote of non-confidence. I don't believe Kinnear and his cronies are no longer in control and are probably packing their things tonight as the buses and streetcars leave the yard.

I agree with most of the posters here that think that Unions are a dinosaur and need to go. The actions of the TTC union and it's members were reckless and irresponsible, the whole safety thing was IMHO complete BS. It looked like more of a provocation than a preventative action.

What if I work in a "union shop" and don't want to join? Do I have the right of "un-assembly"? I doubt it.
The time of the union has come and gone. The sooner the general public realizes this, the better.
You can vote to decertify the union or you can work at a non-unionized shop.

I would rather have the freedom of choice of working unionized or non-unionized than everyone being forced to be non-unionized.

Freedoms are precious and not easily regained once surrendered.

These clowns need a reality check. While everyone has the right to expect a safe workplace, they have gone way too far.

There have been layoffs at the TTC. They also had work cut during Rae days. What a surprise, another misinformed person who is jealous that TTC employees make more.

So many people posting here have rights because of what unions have fought for. Now that they are inconveinienced, they are upset that people are practising their democratic rights. Get over it, go to sleep so you can be well-rested and productive when you go to work in the morning. I would hate for you to be cranky and unproductive like those pricks at the TTC.
