Still anxiously awaiting Shanahan first move as the man in charge of the Leafs. No disrespect to Nonis though.
One wrong move from the man upstairs we are going to have another looooongggggg winter!!!!!! I would love to see Stasny+Thornton wearing the Leafs jerseys in the fall:p
He already made his first move .. He signed off on giving the coach a two year extension ...

Must I remind you that our GM in one calender year spent 25 million dollars and this team is capped out ? How you figure to get Stasny+Thornton in a Leaf uniform when this team is at the cap and only 2 of the 4 defenseman are signed for next year ?

Toronto has 4 defensemen signed for the 2014-15 season,
Phaneuf, Reilly, Gunnarsson, Gleason.
Franson & Gardiner are RFA's.

The Maple Leafs are not at (nowhere near) the cap.
They are $22,380,833 under, with 12 players signed.

I don't care how much cap they have left. They are in the business of moving bodies to make the team better. Its a cop out to blame on the salary cap. One team will win the Cup every year under the same salary cap like the other 31 teams. If they like certain players they should put in an honest effort to get the guy to come in to play for them. Mind you the Leafs will not be in the same league as either the Hawks or the Kings for a little while longer. But, they should do everything in their power to IMPROVE the team every single fricking season!

Really ? So a team that was on the brink of going over the cap ( remember last September they had to figure out how to sign Kadri and Cody Franson at training camp when they only had 5 million in cap space ) and during the season gave two of their players raises for this season ( Kessel 5.4 to 8 millon and Dion 6.5 to 7 million and Kadri goes from 2.7 to 3.1 ) ... Now all of a sudden they don't have Cap issues ? 22 million dollars to sign 12 players means your going to have to find 12 players that avg 1.8 million dollars a year to fill out the roster ... I am pretty sure Thorton and Stasny will be making more then 1.8 million dollars ..

Kadri's cap hit is the same for '14-'15 as it was last season, $2.9M

The cap is going up from $64.3M to somewhere around $71M, let's say an increase of $6.7M, that more than accounts for the increase in Kessel's & Phaneuf's wages ($3.1M total increase).

Should the Leafs acquire Joe Thornton (I presume that's who you meant by 'Thorton'), one would think there's salary headed to northern California in that trade. Stastny (Stasny?) shouldn't come in over $6M/year, still leaving ~$16M for the others.

Oh I forgot in that 22 million your going to use some for Bolland . I think at least 3 million will be required

Richard Peddie's machinations gave the Leafs a nuclear winter. I was fine with Nonis running the show, Shany is an unknown quantity. Whatever they do from here on in, they better not fuck it up.

And I stopped keeping my fingers crossed a long time ago.

Maple Leafs: Darcy Tucker’s salary finally off the books

Six years after leaving Toronto, Darcy Tucker is still signing autographs for the Maple Leafs.
Six years after buying him out, the Leafs have finally stopped mailing him a regular paycheque.
Tucker has been receiving a million dollars annually since then Leafs GM Cliff Fletcher decided in 2008 that the franchise wanted to go in another direction.

At the moment, Toronto has $48.7 million committed to 12 players for next season; that leaves about $22.3 million cap space if the ceiling rises to the expected $71 million for 2014-15.

Given Tucker was one of the "Muskoka 5" who wouldn't waive his no trade clause, I do not understand why the Leafs have Tucker at all these events signing autographs etc.
True, it was his prerogative and he had the right to stand pat and not accept a trade, but the team should have given him the cold shoulder and not be paying him for the events and let him grease his ego with fans fawning all over him!
Sure he was popular but he wasn't a star and there are many other Leafs who bleed true blue that could be signing in his place and nobody would have noticed his absence. Instead he might be an item in a Steve Simmon's column in 20 years "and whatever happened to..."

Some Leafs should become pro golfers :p
They would still be overpaid bums flailing away on ice or in the sand traps.
Thank you for that valuable contribution. Brilliant insight.

Well it seems like there may be several centers available this summer .... if one believes the rumours.

Paul Stastny, 28 ... FA
Joe Thornton, 34 ... On the trade block ?
Brad Richards, 33 ... Buyout rumour
Mike Richards, 29 ... Buyout rumour

Whether or not they would come to Toronto remains to be seen ...

Assume they would ... here is my take.

Stastny - would come without having to give up any assets but, I suspect, at quite a heavy contract. I am still lukewarm on him, but I am beginning to lean toward taking a shot to try to land him.

Mike Richards - if the rumour is true he is about to become a compliance buyout. While not the player who was traded by the Flyers anymore he may still be able to help a team like the Leafs.

Brad Richards - again, if the rumour is true he is about to become a compliance buyout. He is the one I want the least, I am not sure the Leafs should even take notice if he does become available. He really seems to be at the end of his career.

Thornton - while Don Cherry would be ecstatic I would be less so. I think he would get the Leafs into the playoffs, be a great center for Kessel, but at what cost ? Thornton would likely come via the trade route with two years remaining on his contract.

You can add Spezza to the list of available centers.
I am absolutely not interested in him. I think he will spend more time on the injury list then on ice, also he comes with a one year 7mil cap hit.

Shany already fucked up by giving Carlisle an extension.

Toronto Maples Leafs had two buy outs from the lock out they could choose from ( amnesty ) ( Garbo and Komisarek ) and so much cap space and they blew their load last summer and continued by Dion's huge salary and going by all the news they want to trade everyone except 4 players and so they are trying to clean up their fuck up ..

New York Rangers use compliance buyout on Brad Richards and he is now a UFA.
