I will throw in the odd 1967 post. (50 year anniversary BTW which does bring a smile).
Guess we can't begrudge you that.

BTW, is this Montreal's longest drought in team history? ;)

Agreed. There is no cap on ticket prices. Furthermore given that MLSE is in the communications industry, a winning team generates many other streams of revenues for the rest of the parent companies.
I'm glad somebody gets it. There are so many revenue streams all over the place that it would be a virtual gold mine. Guaranteed they'd pass NYR and Mont as the most valuable franchise (at least for a couple of years).

Yeah but 1967 was extra special for the Leafs (and Leaf fans) to win that Cup. WHY?

Because Montreal had guaranteed (the World's Fair organizers and the PM) that they will win the Cup and display it at The Worlds Fair held in Montreal, at the time Montreal was the Largest City in Canada and it was also Canada's 100th birthday. However, The Leafs won the Cup and Paraded in down Bay Street to City Hall. Hab fans hatred for the Leafs grew stronger after that.

Well if his opinion is based on a good understanding of the game of hockey, perhaps you may wish to value that opinion.
It may help you to understand the game
Problem is, I don't see any "true understanding " of the game.

Therefore I don't value the opinion.

While I'm against fighting when staged, last night's tilt was a necessity. Gudbranson had to take a stand and Martin was more than willing to oblige. Vancouver would have looked weak without some sort of redress - and it wasn't mindless gooning like Bertuzzi.

When is Lord Truculent going to shut his mouth? He's not the GM of the Flames and JFJ did less damage as GM than he did.

Watched part of the Leafs game last night vs Canucks that I have to say: I was very impressed by the young Leafs came back from 0-2 to tight 2-2 into the overtime. Unfortunately, Leafs lost in the overtime 2-3. All I want to mention is the crowed of audience is different than I have remembered. The first time I have ever seen. I truly believe this has indicated the full change of the Leafs nation. The fans have finally spoken: Go Leafs Go!!! in the ACC! I have been thinking of watching my first hockey life game for a long time and I do think this has come to the end cause I do love the change.

Go Leafs Go!!!

Just when you though the NHL had it's acts together, the Vanculo Cafucks return to the building. Look after your fallen player, chirp with Taylor Hall later!

That is goon hockey reminiscent of the 70's Flyers. That was a good clean hit, which IS part of the game. Retaliation was totally inappropriate.

What if there was a brawl after every big hit in football?

That hit reminded me of Wendal Clark vs Bruce Bell of St.Louis.

Same reaction too, everyone came to attack Clark, but it was a good clean hit that put Bell's jock near the rafters.

There are a few reasons why fighting is in the game, one of which I believe is the players want it. Many consider it a code of honour, rightly or wrongly depending on your perspective.

The players always react to the impact of the hit. If it's against one of their better players while they're on the ice, they don't have that instant ability to analyze if it is a clean or dirty hit but if they don't respond right away, they risk being labelled soft, weak or not coming to the aid of their teammates.

Similar situation when a player makes a bit clean hit, he's expected to accept the challenge to fight or risks being labelled a turtle.

Until the players change their mentality, fighting will always remain in the game.

..............unless the penalties are harsh enough.

I think the same mentality was involved in bench clearing brawls, i.e. stand up for your teammates, all for one etc. Stronger penalties and now we don't see it anymore.

Regardless, my point was not about the actual fighting, just that retaliating for a clean hit (and most of them are immediately discernable as dirty or not) is not an honourable code of conduct. It is bush league, it is cowardly. A dirty hit? No problem. Go get him.

Ken Linseman was a turtle and he played 15 years in the NHL.

Too many professional enforcers have been lost to complications due to CTE. Wade Belak trained Liev Schreiber for Goon then committed suicide. He had every reason to live and his widowed wife is gorgeous.

If I were in charge of setting the rules in the NHL here's what I would do:

Staged fighting - 5 minute penalty, 3 game misconduct, 3 strike rule.

Spontaneous fighting - same as above but no 3 strike rule.

Cross checks above the shoulders, high sticking, boarding and charging - 5 minutes, if the player is injured 2 automatic game misconduct. Additional games depended on severity of injury.

Elbowing to the head, 5 minutes. This is a tough one since flagrant headshots (Stevens vs Lindros) have declined noticeably.

Was this clean?
