Close.

Leafs in 9th at 53 points. One more at 54 and two at 54. All have played one less than Toronto.
As I said, it's going to be close!

I am liking Lombardi and Kessel. Lombardi is really starting to get back as he scored two to go with Kessel's goal for the 3-0 shutout. Gustavsson is really playing well, although he did not have to do much tonight, sometimes they are the most difficult to maintain. Other teams begins to come on and suddenly the goalie has a lot to do. I have said this before, this is the guy Burke signed.

Carolina beat Winnipeg 2-1 in regulation.
Go LA tonight vs Ottawa.

Go Leafs Go! Leafs win! However, if this team makes the playoffs, it probably will get spanked in a short first round series.

The best goal of the night, was Kessel's goal. Leafs make a rush, get a chance. Don't score, Islanders get the puck go the other way on a 3 on 2. Another big save by Gustavsson! Back the other way, end to end action. Lupal makes strong move from the outside along the boards towards the net, gets the puck towards the net. Kessel charging near the post get a stick on it and it bounces in! What a goal! That is entertaining hockey. Also, that is why this Leaf team will continue to have problems. If the Islanders scored on that 3 on 2 moments before the Leafs scored, I'll be bitching about it. But the Leafs win! Go Leafs Go!

Let's face the facts. It was a 1-0 game in the third period, and the first line on the Leafs playing end to end hockey.

What is Ron Wilson to do? In the newspapers, lately he emphasized defense. Clearly the top line was what he was thinking about. The line of Kessel, Bozak, Lupal, were just on the ice for far too many goals. Wilson split up Kessel and Lupal. Now Kessel and Lupal don't socre. Reunite the same first line that don't like checking very hard, and they go end to end in a 1-0 game in the third period to score. Tonight they win. However, play like this trading chances, and the Leafs will be a .500 team, and that will not be enough to make the playoffs.

What was evident last year, and evident this year at the All-Star break, the Leafs are still weak down the middle on the top line. Put Connolley on the top line as center, not that many chances against teams that play tough defense, which happens to be three quarters of the league. Put Bozak on the top line as center, still not that many chances maybe slightly more than if Connolley was the center, but the defensive game will suffer.

Should try Lombardi again as center on the top line.

Stats can be misleading.

Stats this season for Mike Richards. GP-41 G-14 A -12 pts-26

Stats for Tlyer Bozak this season. GP-39 G-7 A-19 pts-26

Stats for Tim Conolley this season. GP-36 G-7 A-17 pts-24

Even though Richards can choke in the playoffs, I think he is the better player by quite a margin.

Wilson should get on their asses and they them to check harder.

If they don't listen to Wilson, Burke should say something, maybe they listen to him.

All of this talk on Sportsnet about Leafs trading URF Mikhail Grabovski on trading deadline but what the hell is he worth?

Btw Jake Gardiner gets his first professional goal. Grabovski and Kulemin assisted on the goal.

Grabovski scores a fluky knockle baller and Jake Gardiner gets an assist.

Maple Leafs need to finish out the season around 19W & 14 losses to make the playoffs.

Past 2 games make that just a little easier, but a lot of work still to be done.

Nice comeback win. In the past the Leafs would likely have been done after those first two Islander goals.
Nice to see Gardiner get his first.
Grabovski scores a funny one and looked like it would stand, but then the Isles scored a fluke and off to OT where a nice rush ends up with the game winner going in, which was almost a great save.
A huge four points picked up by the Leafs.

They are now in their Allstar break.

Concerning the Leafs ...
NY Rangers 4 Winnipeg 0 ... Yay
Washington 5 Boston 3 .. meh(I believe Wash will win the division, so no concern)
Buff 2 NJ 1 OT ... In regulation would have been better. yay
Philly 3 Florida 2 SO ... Damn Cats get a point. yay

TB 4 Columbus 2 ... yeck

Okay, I don't believe that my beloved HABS are a playoff team, and there is alot of problems to solve there. However, they are 8 points behind the TMLs and only 2 spots behind them 2 weeks could change alot for both of them. Winnipeg will make the playoffs before the TMLs.

Oh yeah, I feel for you diehard TML fans as Doot supports them too, so you're doomed.

Keep repeating it because that will probably be the high water mark for your (and Nose Guy) team this year.
Did you miss where I said the HABS are not a playoff team?

Leafs are back in a playoff spot, seventh.
They need to have a good February to get into a more comfortable spot before heading down the stretch.

Leafs are 10 points ahead and tied for seventh, while Montreal could be as low as last(15th) in the East.
