leafs will make the playoffs this year. I'm calling it.
Only if Reimer doesn't miss significant time. I like and am rooting for the monster to have a come back season...but so far, every time a there is a shot on goal when he's in net I cringe. Way to unsteady for the time being...

Good win for the Leafs.
Connolly did not do much, taking it easy in his Leaf debut.
The Leafs did not need a goal from NHL goal leader Kessel this night.

Reimer on i.r. until Sunday when he may return against Ottawa. If Gustavsson wins on Saturday, I would give him Sunday. Bring Reimer back against New Jersey on ... whenever they play the Devils.

I thought that given it's Connolly's first game in quite awhile, he actually looked pretty good. There were some pretty good scoring chances generated from that line, but obviously there were some awesome chances that wasn't converted mostly due to the lack of chemistry. Kessel was stoned twice on breakaways otherwise he could've easily added to his goal total. Maybe it was just me, but the ice looked horrible as there were so many fanned shots/one timers....

NYR ice almost always sucks. I believe it is the worst ice in the north part of the league.

The Leafs are beating the teams they have to beat to make it to the playoffs. Of course, if they make the playoffs, they have to face teams like Boston and Philadelphia.

Leafs outworked Pittsburgh tonite.
They fought hard in the boards the whole game.
Just maybe a chance for a post season run?

It is great that Connolly scored. Even better that Connolly and Kessel score on the same night, add to that the fact that they assisted on each other's goals makes everything looking rosy in Leaf Nation.

Reimer.
As well as Gustavsson has played, the team needs Reimer back in goal and soon. I believe that it is not so much that they need James Reimer himself, but the confidence Reimer gives them.

Why the fuck is Komisarek killing penalties?
He should be playing with Finger.
You really want Jeff Finger playing on the Maple Leafs defence?

That's the only way they could play together, as Mike Komisarek has a No Movement (limited no-trade) clause in his contract.

Komo's been playing very well since the 2nd half of last season. He's back to his ol' Mtl form...tough, nasty & smart positional hockey. He's outplayed Luke Schenn in ever aspect. He's also outplayed Cody Franson, of course. I wonder what the Leafs will do with Franson. My guess is that they should ship him to the Marlies in order to give him some work. There's no way they'll sit Schenn or Gardiner, who has been very good.

The Leafs are for real this season. They are balanced, have very good chemistry, appear to get along great, they're very tough and play smart hockey. They are a very well-coached team, have a lot of depth, solid goaltending in Reimer, Gustaffson & Scrivens, and are very young....one of the two youngest teams in the entire NHL.

Kessel & Phaneuf's strong starts make Brian Burke appear like a genius, and what about the team's acquisitions of Jake Gardiner, Matt Frattin & Mathew Lombardi? Brilliant!

There's still room to improve in the area of special teams.

Komisarek has been a disaster.
He may be playing better than before but he is still shit.
I would make him a healthy scratch until he demands a trade.
The problem is that I don`t think the Leafs could give him away for free.
They would have to take some other dead money contract back in return or pay a significant chunk of his salary.
Failing to face the reality of their mistakes cost them dearly with Toskala and they should have learned their lesson.

Guys, the Leafs beat the Pittsburg "B" team (no Crosby).
pens put up 100pts last year without their 3 stars most of the season.. pits have the deepest team they have great role players. when their stars are healthy they will be at the cup finals again. IMO.

but Fleury wasn't in net last night.

If the Penguins go from being an 'A' team to 'B' team because of one player (yes, even Crosby), then they don't have much of a team. This is a team that has been picked to win the Cup by Las Vegas oddsmakers even WITHOUT Crosby!
