Ban Russia. We can have a great (probably better) tournament without them. Anyway, I still remember that game from years ago when the Russians grabbed all the Canadian players at the start of the game resulting in both teams being disqualified. Ban Belarus as well.

"Wayne Gretzky is using his voice and platform to speak out against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. During Saturday night's broadcast of the 2022 Stadium Series game on TNT, Gretzky said that Russia should not be allowed to participate at the re-scheduled World Junior tournament this summer. "It's not good."

The 1987 Junior game was just as much Canada's fault as Russia's, and it wasn't at the start of the game it was halfway thru.

So you said it happened at the beginning of the game. How could anyone have been losing?
I don't think he said that. He said the brawl started off a puck drop. So based on FFA's post, it stands to reason the score was 4-2 at the time the brawl started from a face-off.

It didn't start at a puck drop or face off either...

Hey JW, don't bother engaging in minutiae with 1 or 2 members.

The important points are that the Soviets cleared the bench first and they were already out of medal contention.
"The Soviets, well back in the standings, had nothing to lose by the ejection."

Anyway, back to the present. Ban Russia and Belarus. Plus, Russia has a long history of cheating in sports. Glad Wayne spoke up.

From wiki's account of what happened...

"The brawl began after a face-off as Sergei Shesterikov collided with Everett Sanipass with 6:07 left in the second period, resulting in a fight between the two. Soviet player Pavel Kostichkin also levelled a two-handed slash at Fleury, leading to another fight. The battle quickly escalated into a line brawl involving all skaters on the ice for both teams."

I don't think there is any video of the actual start of the brawl itself, at least none that I could find. It appears as though the play (faceoff) may have started (puck drop) while the network was still off to commercial and only picked up once the network returned to the live broadcast with the line brawl already in full swing. If there is in fact footage of the actual start, would love to see it.

The point I was trying to make is that it wasn't just all Russia's fault, Canada was more than game-on to get involved in the nonsense...Fleury cross checked a Russian from behind and he got up and punched Fleury in the head...when the brawl was on, the Canadian team was knocking the shit out of the Russians and they defended...the game was cheap and dirty all thru out, lots of after whistle stuff, etc...

Also, the Canadian team was coached by Bert Templeton who's teams were often PIM leaders in their leagues...earlier in the 1987 tournament Canada and the United States got into a fight in the pre-game skate, Brendan Shanahan was Canada's main punch thrower in that...this team was not Lady Byng winners.
