Its not a big deal that rich people buy politicians in the US, even though its totally messed up.
It should be a big deal when lobbyists representing another country try to buy a politician to put up someone less critical of their country.
There was a big stink here about China possibly funding a conservative candidate, this goes way further.
Remember instances in both Alabama and Louisiana (where I think they still have drive thru margarita stands), but this is NOT accepted practice anywhere. Bribery is a criminal offence, even under totalitarian regimes - depending on who's getting bribed, of course...

The reality is they are a bunch of Americans lobbying their government to adopt policies they support, just like every other American has a right to do.

That is an unnecessary qualification, that the people handing over the money to AIPAC be foreigners.
FARA requires those who receive funds or act on behalf of a foreign government to register as a foreign agent.
