As Shatkins says, they will retool or reload for 2018, built around JD and the starting rotation and if we are not in the race by the All Star break, you can bet there will be a sell off and full rebuild.
Don't over think, guys. Pay JD what the market will pay for 3rd baseman slugger and the contract will be heavily front loaded. Then, a couple of years in the back-end pays him DH rates. Because by that time you would hope one of the kids will be ready to take over the infield jobs.

Okay, so I found that interview with JD that aired during sundays Yankee game. Right after interview ended Buck and Pat came on and said something to the effect of "and yet word from Blue Jay management is they want to go with youth". Unfortunately thats not part of YT video.

Also, does it not seem JD gives off the impression he wants to stay in Toronto, but he's not entirely sure he'll be back??
Or am I reading it wrong??
That is how I took it. Did you notice how a few of the times he had a lengthy pause to think how he wanted to phrase things in a particular way? Can't blame him, but he knows that this is a business, and he was every bit the businessman.

I think if Jays do keep Donaldson (and I'm conflicted and do sorta want him to stay) he should be good for at least 3 top seasons before he trails off.

And by top season I mean 30-35+ homeruns, 95+ ribbies and around a .270 BA

would you give him 7 years, $210.000,000.00?

If JD has his typical great year in 2018, like top 5 in WAR, I can see him getting $150mil over 5 years. Not bad for a 33 yo.

Yeah, and that begs the question again, do you keep him long-term or trade him this upcoming year so you get some value for him in return???

It depends on what the team's primary goal is. When do they really think they have the chance to make a run? Does competing next year have greater priority than competing 3 years down the road?

They have said they want to "compete" next year. People seem to think that means taking a run at the World Series. But that could easily be interpreted as, "We don't want to look like fools out there next year." The latter is a very different scenario.

If the Jays really want to take a run in 3 years, then trading Donaldson is the right move, if you get an offer you can't refuse. Namely someone who can help you now plus good prospects. That's not popular with the fans but from an organizational perspective, it's the right move (assuming your run is in a few years, not next year).

The fans want the new GM to prove himself and, ironically, making the right move (trading Donaldson) may be the real litmus test.

He doesnt have an asking price till 2019
You make that decision close to trade deadline next year.
And what if he breaks his leg or pulls a hammy midseason???

Ooopsss
Donaldson Is eligible for arbitration, he will get a huge contract but unless they can get him to extend, it will be a 1 year contract. If they don't or can't sign him Jays get notta. So they will probably find out what it will take to sign him long term. He said he wants to stay here and this is one way to find out how serious he is and what he expects for compensation. Makes the decision clearer.

So long as the Blue Jays offer Donaldson a qualifying offer (next offseason) they will get a draft pick.

I just read that John Gibbons and his entire coaching staff will be back in 2018....translation win 82 games and finish third is fine

Just like '15 and '16. They do it every year.

If they finished last with 75 wins would have been the same. Gibbons or any manager can only do so much with the players the GM provides - at some point the players have to perform.

+1

Half the time all your doing is wasting money by throwing the manager under the bus and turning over a new management team.
