2 months ago during the lockdown I downloaded a whole bunch of his movies. Don't know why. He just popped into my head one evening.

The Cincinnati Kid, The Getaway, The Sand Pebbles and Tom Horn.

A few things struck me about him. He's a better actor than I remembered. He's good looking guy with a decent build. On screen he's the type of guy that appeals to both sexes. It's easy too see why he was box office gold for many years.

I went to Wikipedia to refresh me memory of his life. He was a real rebel before he was an actor. Bouncing around and getting a fair bit of trouble in the military. He ended up contracting lung cancer. Not from smoking they said but from asbestos exposure. Anyways he died in Mexico at a private treatment centre where was being treated with some alternative therapy. I remember laetrile was the rage in those days. Maybe that's what he was trying. Goes to show you that cancer doesn't have any respect for anyone's bank account or fame. It kills indiscriminately.

The King of Cool

He was THE coolest guy of his era. Next level of cool below him was Paul Newman, James Garner and James Coburn. Also Sean Connery.

But McQueen, Garner and Coburn in one movie was awesome. No stunt man needed for the motorcycle scene. "Hiltz! Cooler."

Sir Steve McQueen is the first Black filmmaker to win the Best Picture Oscar, how cool is that?
Sir Steve McQueen won a Best Picture Oscar for 12 Years a Slave, Brad Pitt was the Executive Producer. He also made Shame and Widows and he just completed a series called Small Axe which follows the struggles of an Indian family living in London from 1969 onward.

Super Cool Steve McQueen's best year was 1968. That year he made Bullitt and The Thomas Crown Affair, both huge hits. The later was featured on TCM on Friday. This is why I want HBO MAX, it gives you access to WB's back catalogue, which includes The Great Escape, The Maltese Falcon and The Asphalt Jungle. McQueen was actually younger than Clint Eastwood, had he lived there are a number of films he could have played. This is the most obvious.

Gabriel Byrne played it very McQueen.

Is anybody here old enough to remember having seen Steve in his first starring movie role, in the old semi-horror movie "The Blob" in 1958, when it was first released?
