I'm happy Duane Allman is #2.

I can understand why Angus is #97 - what has he done lately??? If ya play the same songs for so long, I'd hope you'd be good at it!!!

Jack White is better than Mark Knopfler?

I like them both but...COME ON!

Just shows how they cow down to popular trends instead of presenting a true perspective.

Probably why I never read this crap.
Rolling Stone is a shit as SPIN

You want a GOOD music mag?
Buy MOJO from the UK.
The best music journalism you'll ever find, period.
Its ~$11 at most newstands,...totally worth it.

I find MOJO is a little too retro as I like to listen to new artists as well. I find that UNCUT provides more new names to explore along with some good articles on older artists. As well there's also an over 70 minute CD included with each issue which is a sampler of new releases. It helps you decide which artists are worthy of spending money on.

Who thinks Rolling Stone is a musician magazine? No musicians, I can assure you. It is, at best, a pop culture magazine with an emphasis on music.

The list only reflects the musical tastes of whoever contributed to it. The title of the list should have been "Rolling Stone's Favorite 100 Guitarists".

I think it's understood that when a magazine posts a list like this, it's their personal preference. It's obviously a very subjective matter, not objective like who's the richest man.

It was compiled by David Fricke and the magazine's editors.

I know this thread is from over 3 years ago but I just wanted to Comment on that Dave Mustaine is not mentioned in this at all.

There is NO way that U2's Edge cracks the top 25 of all time....regardless if they are arguably one of the top bands of this generation.

Even Prince is better than some of these crappy inclusions...

I never saw this list before, but since it's up now, how can Alvin Lee of Ten Years After not be on the list. For those older guys, do you remember Alvin playing that song on their live album or at Woodstock? His song "I'm Going Home" was a bench mark that all guitar players measured against, it was like an anthem for all guitar players, when you knew how to play to I'm Going Home, you made it. He is absolutely incredible, great rock'n roll and blues player.

I noticed Chet Atkins is missing.

I'd put David Gilmour much higher as well.

?

Obviously this list intentionally is limited to rock guitarists, hence the omission of classical guitarists like Segovia, or jazz guitraists like Wes Montgomery.
But if your talking rock, and you're going to put Link Wray on the list, then you should also have Duane Eddy there.

Thre is absolutely no way that Keith Richards belongs on this list . He is barely competent . Not saying the music isn't great but not exactly challenging from an axe standpoint .
I thought the same until I tried to play some of his stuff. Sure, it's not the most complex, but he was a little ahead of the pack when it came to alternate tuning.

I'm not sure which guitarist played the best licks during the Stones peak of 1969-71, but they haven't been the same since Mick Taylor left the band.
I think "Honky Tonk Woman" was his first studio performance with them, did he play the cool lead? How about "Can't You Hear Me Knocking", that's a powerful one as well.
If so, I'd put him on the list, ahead of Richards.

Ritchie Blackmore is #55?

I remember he was rated ahead of Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page at the time.

Heaven, definately Heaven
When Joan Jett is on the list and Neil Schon of Journey is NOT on the list, then the list is crap and the makers of the list should be deprived of their pot, coke and alcohol for 2 weeks.
