First off, the guy he stabbed was dead in about 10 seconds.

It takes time to come up with a plan of action. You don't go from dozing on a bus to being Rambo in 10 seconds.

Second off, exactly how are you supposed to intervene? The guy is in a blood lust, he's basically swinging a sword, covered in blood, slippery, and you're going to do what? Get killed yourself?

Maybe if you were packing heat, you might have a chance, but that's about it.
Not to mention you dont know if the guy is on drugs or not.

Ever confronted someone who's on PCP??? Trust me they feel ZERO pain, and their mind is on a different planet. I'd be very apprehensive trying to disarm someone who's on that drug from their knife.

I am very upset that the cops didn't execute this disgusting beast on the spot.

The last thing I wanted to see is the judge letting him go due to some insanity plead.

Good summation

Here is a good summation from the Star today. Keep in mind it is in the middle of the night.

On the "benefit" side of the equation, media reports contend that by the time passengers knew what had happened, the victim had been stabbed several times, and there was blood spurting all over the bus.

He was well beyond saving and nothing could have been gained by rushing the attacker other than securing him for arrest – a feat that was accomplished by exiting and sealing the bus.

Which leads to the "risk" side of the equation.

Even in their stunned state, it was immediately obvious to other passengers that the attacker appeared not in a normal state of mind. Garnet Caton, a passenger close to the attack, reports:"He looked totally calm. "

Anyone standing in a fountain of blood, repeatedly thrusting a knife into someone's throat, and being totally calm while doing so, is not sane. Calm, reasoned intervention with one so deranged was going to have no effect. The only possible intervention would have been physical, leading undoubtedly to more pathos, more death.

Faced with almost no possibility of doing any real good, scared out of their minds, Greyhound passengers on a dark road outside the sleepy city of Brandon did exactly the right thing.

As a result, only one man died, and his life was not within their power to save. Thanks to their actions, the attacker is in jail.

They did what they could.

No one should expect more of anyone, even themselves, than that.

so ... crazy motherfuckers should represent themselves cause they do not "deserve a lawyer"??? i can just see how that play out.

If he did not have a lawyer he would not know how to prepare for his case in such a way a lawyer would and if he had one appointed for him it would not be from his money. Lawyers know the best plea for a person and are there to also offer advice. He does not deserve any help or advice.

I would not be surprised.

From all accounts, the guy seem not to be totaly there. I would not be surprised if he was in an altered state.

I stand corrected. Having read a little more on the story, I think bailing out of the bus was the smart thing to do. Can't save someone that was already dead. Blood lust. Big knife. Narrow aisle. The situation was grim from all angles.

Regardless of society's indignation over the most heinous crimes, the right to counsel is a fundamental right provided by English law, upon which US/Canadian Constitution/Charter is based.

Without the assistance of counsel, people would be on their own to protect themselves from the government, which has practically unlimited resources.

So as much as Vince Li and his crime may disgust you, if he doesn't get a lawyer, then no one would get a lawyer, and everyone would be susceptible to whatever the government can come up with.

Yeah the news is good at not giving all the details right away. The police themselves usually do not leak all information immediatly.

They were discussing going ahead in this case ie... getting it done as fast as they could and that maybe this and maybe that. If something is so gruesome as this occurs with as many witnesses as there is against him anyhow. I say so be it. As long as those with driving infractures, custody battles, cases where they are not 100% sure if someone did it or not etc... etc... still have thier rights. Myself I say good. They also did say this is the first case in Canada of this nature. Let it be the exception.

That is one sick guy I just watched the one video and the sicko was actually ripping pieces of flesh off and eating it. I do not think this guy/beast/devil/phsyco/piece of turd even deserves a lawyer.
That's not a video of him eating the corpse. That's a recording of the police scanner audio.

I question the accuracy of what they reported. It was dark, don't forget and the guy was at the BACK of the bus.

Well how the heck do passenger say he's 6"ft when the pics clearly show like a 5'8" or 5'9". He mustive have fat pads with'em to be 200lbs.

His hand bandaged probably from breaking the window and his face well... A few police batons in the face or meet concrete wall.

Now everyone will be more suspicious to Chinese people. I wonder will this freak people out to the rich people going to the Summer Olympics in China?

Grey Hound does not have the budget like the airports for metal detectors or sniffer dogs. Will we need a under cover security on the bus? Or will we all sit closer to the front were the driver can see some faces in the rare view mirror?

And who decides what the exceptions will be? That's one of those pesky things about rights -- EVERYONE has to have them or they aren't worth the paper they are printed on.

I will and I will make it read anyone that commits a terrible torturous crime in front of 3 or more witnesses and is without a reasonable doubt guilty of such a terrible crime of torture or torturous murder that would give way to the need of mental health professionals for those present and/or affecting any number of children under the age of 16 will have thier right to a lawyer declinded. Jades law section 1 paragraph 1. :D

Let's face it even there is faults with todays laws. Let's rewrite them all. :)
