Actually, that's a good thing in a way. As do most people, I find this story almost unbelievably bizarre.
Given the time it takes to stop and evacuate the bus, I find it slightly odd that no one made an effort to intervene. Albeit, the guy was large, armed and crazy, I would have expected there to be at least a few potential heros in the crowd. I do not know how I would have reacted, but I find it odd that we panic in such situations to the point were a large group can be terrorized by an individual.
I suppose I will take flak over this comment, but I do recall a situation a year or two ago where the passengers on a flight subdued a raving passenger and actually used excessive force given the circumstance.
As for the many calls for increased security, this is a rare and isolated incident. It is unrealistic to have airport style security for ground based mass transit. The logistics of bus travel are not open to even simple things like metal detectors. As I recall, most buses still pick up and drop off at remote locations. Not every passenger boards at a major bus terminal. At some point we need to accept that there are crazy people in this world and we can't isolate ourselves from every potentially dangerous situation. I would say the odds are better here than Bagdad, Bogata, Darfur or the Congo just to name a few. Count your blessings
