It was embarrassing the guy got invited given the connection with Nazi Germany. I'm sure that he was simply put forward as a "war veteran" and no one checked it out further. Hence the apology.

I think you have to be my age and a WW2 buff who dated a Ukrainian woman decades ago and knew the background of many of those old guys to get the red flag right away.

As I wrote a couple of times further up, the Galician SS was cleared as a unit by the Canadian government decades ago because the Ukrainian-Canadian community contained thousands of these guys after WW2. They fled Europe and emigrated to Canada and made up a large and influential part of the U-C community.

The speaker and prime ministers office are two seperate entities.
The speakers office acts independently and the speaker was able to invite his own allotment of guests witout notifying other members of parliament

Since he served in that Division I don't believe he would have been complicit in a war crime.

But it's difficult for his staff to get ahead of his addiction for attention. This guy has to be in front of a camera every day spouting off about what he describes as a world shaking moment.

Given that the event was momentous and meant to showcase Zelensky, the gaffe was pretty small.

Again though, my point is why HE didn't say anything. I mean fuck, if anyone would know anything about potential red flags regarding a unit, it would be a dude who actually served in it. Even if he thinks he did nothing wrong, he must be aware of the optics. As they say, Hitler: Why we can't have nice things. Just ask the Finnish Air Force.

I guess I am your age, and I am a WW2 geek, so I knew of the unit. Not all the details, but enough to go all Woo Young Woo with the whoa whoa.
