Hey Fun For All, are we acting appropriate bring Gretzky and Orr into a Matthews thread? Will someone and his two buddies get upset?
Nobody is like you.

The way you talk about "someone and his two buddies" is like the way you talk about "certain races". You obviously mean blacks and you obviously mean me. Just say what you mean. No need for riddles.

You're getting personal again. Are you upset again?

"You seem to like putting labels on people."

What races are you referring to? Asians?
You love to ask questions. Here are two simple questions for you?

1) Why are you always playing the race card and obsessed with race?

2) Do you like everyone in every race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc.? Just answer YES or NO. Don't ramble.

I knew that you wouldn't answer.

Hey Shack, here are a couple of t-shirts for you since you are so race obsessed. Instead of VP, you can customized it to whoever you want.

TBH, to think that there will be no more generational talents does not seem realistic. There's a reason that that term is used.
I meant the last one to be drafted, there hasn't been one since him, not the last ever. There has been 5 years of average to below average pics for the most part. If you get 6 or 7 years of that how will it affect the league years down the road. There hasn't been a player drafted in years that anyone would pay just to see them play.

Okay. Big difference from how I originally interpreted it. I see what you're saying.

I think that these things are cyclical. You get a lull for a while and then all of a sudden you may get a flurry of great talents coming along. Maybe even multiples in a single year, like Sid and Ovie. And once these guys come along, they spend 15-20 years exciting the fans. I think people still pay to watch those two guys, not just the younger guys. People will be paying to watch McDavid and Matthews for another 10 years at least, barring injuries.

Keep in mind also, that with the amount of money being made by the elite players there will always be lots of parents trying to cash in on their kids. They spend fortunes on their development which should go a long way toward ensuring a pipeline of great players, even if somewhat sporadic. Sure, it would be nice for it to happen more often but I don't think that it's anything that the game can't withstand.

Anyway, that's my take.

No surprise the 3 buddies have derailed another thread.
dartsie, we all bow down in AWE at your unprecedented talents in that regard. Don't sell yourself short because you seem worried about losing your crown. It ain't gonna happen.

p.s. See my previous post.

It does make me realize that compared to the 70's and 80's we are sadly lacking superstars. Think of all the amazing players on those teams in Montreal, Islanders, Oilers and Orr, Espo, Park, Dionne, Denis Savard, Gilbert Perrault and I'm sure that I'm leaving out a bunch.

I think that part of the problem is not there is not enough talent, but the way that the game is coached now, there is so much emphasis on positional play and team defense that players are not allowed to display their talents. They are not allowed to be caught out of position. How many players nowadays make rushes up the ice like Lafleur, Perrault, Robinson, Orr. That was exciting as hell. The game now just isn't as exciting due to, IMO, overcoaching. It's a great game when the players are allowed to be creative and the game flows. I think that that is being stifled.

Everybody agrees that today's players are bigger and faster and stronger. I think there's lots of talent but the talent of today's players is not allowed to be spotlighted.

You mention all those great players, but leave out Steve Shutt and Bob Gainey?

Pretty much. The last 4 drafts plus 2021 will have given us good to very good players at the top. That will change in 2022 with Wright and 2023 with Bedard.

When it comes to generational talents it's usually 7-10 years between cycles: Lemieux in 1984, Lindros in 1991, Crosby in 2005 and McDavid in 2015. As great as Matthews is I don't quite consider him generational.

There haven't been any good players at the top, all jobbers for the most part.
