and Nylander is plus 1. Matthews is -2 so he must suck according to Dart.
Using Dart's method of player evaluation Josh Anderson is -8 so he must suck big time.
McD has 22 pts in 10 games and his team is 9 wins 1 loss yet he's only +5

Dart likes Kerfoot because he looks like him.

I usually don't waste time with you but where do you get Nylander at plus 1?

Never said he suck.

This is a Maple Leaf thread. Josh Anderson doesn't play for the Leafs.

There are over 53 players with a better +/- than McD and over 70 players with a plus of 5 or above.

I know plus/minus doesn't mean much to some people. Anyway, here are some annual stats for two pretty good players.
Bobby Orr 124
Larry Robinson 120 (730 career)

So you're saying Josh Anderson sucks.

"Combined -3 for a line is 1 goal against."
Combined +3 for a line is 1 goal for.

If Matthews is a great player at minus 2. Imagine how much greater he would be at minus 4 or minus 6.

He pretty much does. In seven seasons, only scored 20 or more goals once. This year, he's got 3 goals, is a minus 10 overall. Feels like not much of a scoring threat, and more of a liability every time he's on the ice.

Bobby Orr retired over 40 years ago and Larry Robinson about 30 years ago...hockey has changed since than.

Interesting article. I think where it matters most is at the team level. Presumably, a team with the better plus/minus would normally have a better W-L than a team with a worse plus/minus. Yes, no?

Here are, IMHO, 3 other statistics that could be misleading.
1) Games won
2) Save percentage
3) GAA

A goalie on a good team should have more games won, a better save percentage and GAA than an identical goalie on a bad team.

On a team with a high flying offense, the second and 3rd do not necessarily apply.

This is Grant Fuhr. 8th column is GAA. 13th column is SV%

Again, those Fuhr numbers are from 30-35 years ago, NHL was a lot different then...lots of 100 point scorers and very few GAA under 3.00...

I realize that, but even for then, Fuhr's numbers must have been below average. Most years he was close to 4 goals/game and save % was well under .900

The thing said avour Fuhr was that he made the saves late in the game when it was needed most. But his numbers seem to clearly conflict with darts' assertions.

I would suggest that Fuhr is an outlier and is only a sample of one. A larger sample is needed to prove or disprove a point.

I proved my point. A goalie on a team with a high flying offense does not necessarily need a good GAA or SV% to win a lot of games.

Trying to make generalizations is a slippery slope.
