I would assume that if this gets to court, the CCTV footage will have to be released. IF it gets to court
You can bet the law firms will be jumping all over this if the family sues the Toronto Police. This is a high profile case even if the best lawyers took this case pro bono.

There is footage from another angle that clearly shows how far he was standing (behind the white line next to drivers seat) and that he took a step forward (no lunging at the cops) which resulted in the shots. Furthermore, after the initial 3 shots you can see him drop, followed by more cops shouting "drop the knife", followed by another 6 shots, and then a tazer.

His mistake? He kept shouting at the cops calling them pussies, that they don't have the guts. And when they told him, not to take another step, he did.

Not sure how any of this explains why they didn't tazer him in the first place instead of shooting him, him falling to the ground, shooting some more, then tazing him.

But no i get it - he was armed with a knife rather than a gun. Tazers seem to be meant for unarmed individuals with mental issues.

For what it's worth I searched Facebook the morning after and saw the same thing...
Which of course is completely irrelevant.

He did not have a gun. He did not threaten to shoot anybody. He had a knife.

The shooting may or may not be wrong in itself but I agree with the comment from the ex cop on CBC. It is the police behaviour BEFORE the shooting that seems to have been problematic.

Why didn't they move back and establish a safe perimeter. OK, he might have come out, and that would change things. But they could have pulled back to thirty feet or so once they saw that he was armed and alone in there.

By the time they pulled the trigger it might hand been the right choice, but the behaviour before that point really limited the choices.

You know, pending the outcome of the investigation, something tells me this may turn ugly for Toronto, I see major rioting in Toronto much like the Rodney King beating in LA.
Doubtful. I see charges of some sort laid. Or a release of eveidence to back up any innocence. This WASNT racially motivated. And we in Canada tend to be a little more measured in our responses to these things. Even the people who organized the walk today were pissed off at the agitators who tried to rush the doors at the police station. I think most people in the city can see this is ONE cop, and not systemic of the police in this city.

The fact this one cop was on ONLY one who discharged his weapon pretty much proves that.

You can clearly see the guy is messed in the head, he kept calling them "pussies". He was also very clearly quite far back, arms crossed (not in any threatening stance) and he was defiant when they told him "if you take one step forward"...he eventually takes a step forward and the shots start.

I fail to see how him stepping forward posed any imminent threat. Sure, they could've tazed him for that...but shooting him? And then firing 6 more times when he clearly wasn't moving toward them? And then tazing him again at the end?

You can also clearly see he was tazered after 9 shots had already been fired...seriously f*cking moronic and idiotic. It's not some random dude with a gun - police are supposed to be professionals for christsake.

My prediction....This takes a while to investigate.

No charges.

Maybe a change to police procedures ie all officers carry tazers and Sammy will be a hero for CHANGIBG the ways of the Police department.

Coupled with TTC footage - I think this time charges will be laid and that one officer will not get away with it.

Gotta agree, that doesnt look good (for the cop).

And the fact he felt the need to shoot NINE times also doesnt look good

No, being an asshole and having pictures of guns is still not a crime punishable by death in this country.
Otherwise Fuji would have been dead decades ago.

One cop fires 9 bullets and no other cop felt threatened enough to fire?
It really doesn't look good for this one cop.
Kid with knife was a punk. Think of it as future crime prevention.

my view of the video shows no officer-in-charge, cops walking around aimlessly, some appearing to be trying to dis-associate themselves from the situation. and then bam-bam-bam etc. the tazer was probably deployed as a cover-all-our-asses step.

Actually they do have CCTV and the TTC has stated very clearly that the video will NOT be released publicly as is their policy. It was in the papers the next day.

It does seem excessive especially if he was hit with the first two. No one seems to wonder why the kid effectively hijacked a streetcar with a knife in the first place. What normal person does something like that in the first place?
