The question I suppose is was today "Bloody Sunday" January 9 o.s./22 January n.s. 1905 or more a prefiguring of 25 October o.s./7 November n.s. 1917?

Remains to be answered. What seems to be clear though is that Ukrainian blood has less slave genes than Russian one. Ukrainians are prepared to die for their freedom.

Depends if the cossacks stay loyal to the Tsar or not. If the cossacks side with the demonstrators, it's game over and the Bolsheviks occupy the Winter Palace and form a new government.

I didn't mean it literally, jeez, does that even require an explanation?

Like all revolutions the questions posed by the Russian Revolution are fascinating, particularly when one looks at post Soviet Russia. For example the Cossacks are very much back after decades of repression - indeed the Government has drafted in Cossacks to aid in Sochi.

As to your actual comment, how true. The same was true in Iran with the Imperial Guard.

They never went away. There's a vid on YouTube about the Kuban which tells proudly how the cossack host still identifies strongly with its military role. One of the occasional themes of the Figes book I mentioned was that the cossacks did not identify with the ordinary Russian peasants whom they considered lesser cattle. Explains a lot.

Putin is a bully...he has manipulated the course of the elections by 1) being President and when his term is finished, 2) being Prime Minister and he was calling the shots anyway!! and when that term is finished he can run again for President and vice versa...he will do this till 2024...the west calls this democracy...? Also if Ukraine don't comply with his request that they align with Russia he will cut off oil supply to them.

Worse. Putin is a gangster and then some (ex-KGB).

Death toll is rising.
The Guardian’s Ian Traynor in Kiev witnessed four police snipers, two of whom fired live rounds at protesters.

“I saw marksmen firing from automatic weapons with telescopic sights,” Ian said in a telephone update. He also reported seeing the bodies of 12 named protesters who had been bought to a makeshift morgue in the lobby of his hotel. All had been shot, according to medics.

If Yanukovych wants to become a kleptocrat like his pal Vlad he has to hurry up and slaughter his citizens. That's the gist of it, after Sochi Vlad will help him do so.
