One more place for business to save money (hydro & maintenace costs)
One thingthat many businesses do not pay attention to is EXIT SIGNS, most of which use 2 15 watt bulbs which works out to 262KW per year if my calculations are correct and at 10 cents per KWH, that is about $26 per year per sign... it adds up fast when there is multiple signs.
SOLUTION, most exit signs can be retrofitted with an LED bar which uses 1.2-1.5Watts, cuts maintenance costs as most are rated for 25 years and I think guaranteed for 10 years. The current genereation LED bar are universal voltage on the AC and DC sides (120/347VAC & 6-24VDC)
Speaking about LEDs, they are at least a few years off for residential use, once you see them in commercial applications... it will probably be a couple of years before they are ready to be marketed towards or are practical for residential use.
Osram Sylvania has some incredible LEDs.. which are capable of changing colours.. these LED will save a lot of hydro when it comes to lighting signs... It will be interesting to see where these turn up being used.
