My deep insights say that the playoffs are the only thing that matters. IMHO, if you don't win the Stanley cup then the teams season is a failure!!

When Leafs won the Division and lost to Montreal in round 1 that was considered a huge failure.
When Florida barely made the playoffs as 16th seed, beat the juggernaught Bruins in round 1 and made it to the Finals that was considered a huge success.
So you sir are correct. No one gloats about the President's Trophy.
Regular season is a means to make the playoffs. Once in it means nothing.
The Leafs under Matthews era has made the playoffs every single season.
No other team has made the playoffs as often as the Leafs have during this period.
If regular season holds so much significance shouldn't the Leafs be getting more accolades rather than all this bashing.

I'll keep posting after every Leafs game, because who knows if the Leafs will even make the playoffs or not?? Also, it will be interesting to see who the Leafs play in the 1st round, if they do make the playoffs??
As I said before, "the regular season is just a means to an end." The end is if a team qualifies for the playoffs or not?? As well, as what seed they finish in, and as a result who for example, the Leafs play in the 1st round etc

Don't forget, in the past the regular season was also important for player bonuses. Score 50 goals, get an extra $500,000. I don't think think teams can offer bonuses anymore.
There are still some bonuses that can be offered, but they are limited in scope (who, what and size).
Based on my quick research following can be offered bonuses in contracts - it was quick research though
1) Players over 35 (games played only I believe)
2) Plays with over 400 career games coming off a long term injury (games played only I believe)
3) Entry level contracts, which have very specific targets on production as defined by the league and not the team (Goals, Points, Awards)
For players #1 and #2, If the bonuses earned during the year exceed a team's cap space available, they count against the cap room the next season. And teams don't like that.
For #3, ELC's which have league defined targets, bonuses earned do not count against the cap.
For a rookie or second year player on an ELC (some 3rd years may also be on an ELC) getting from 19 to 20 goals, will get you an extra $250,000.

Arn‘t you contradicting yourself? You wrote “regular season means nothing” but then you said this ^^^. If the Leafs are not sure to make the playoffs and you find it interesting to see who they play in the first round, doesn’t that make the regular season means something?
For teams like Ottawa and Montreal, regular season means huge success if they can make the playoffs, and for players it means the world for those who are in their contract year like Marner and Tavares and those like Ovie who has a chance to set records.

And it's also interesting to see how a player progresses over the course of his career and the best measure of that is comparing their stats during the regular season. They are consistently scheduled to play 82 games and against all of the other players in the league year after year after year. Comparisons between players and comparisons of a single player over different years is mainly done from the regular season stats.
Playoff success is more team oriented. How do you evaluate a player who gets knocked out in 4 games or doesn't make the playoffs at all. Each year there must be a bunch of superstars that never make the playoffs. If Pittsburgh misses the playoffs the Crosby is shit because only the playoffs count.

I guess you're right. However, in the regular season I never watch full Leaf games. I just glance at the highlights. However, when Leaf playoff games come around, I'm all in. I don't miss even a second of these Leaf playoff games.
Once again, he has no concept of what he's saying. It usually makes no sense, and as you said, self-contradiction is the norm for him. Lots of bravado, little substance.
Why?? For the most part the 82 game NHL season is totally boring. The NHL makes it such a long season, just to make extra money.
