Yeah but can he be proud of it? What the hell did he do to deserve that ring? He missed almost 130 games(was mostly used as a sub), batted less than 220 and played in zero playoff games. When he plays, the White sox have nothing to show for it. When he is out, the White Sox wins the world series. I for one see this Thomas thing having a possible "Windfield" type effect from 92. There are many question marks regarding the Big Hurt.
- Will he produce?
- Will he stay healthy?
- Will he display the much needed all-star veteran respect and leadership?
- Will he get along with everyone? Managers, players...ect...
I'm sure Thomas could have gotten the same money in another city, but he decided on Toronto. If all goes well, this could be the one thing that might keep Wells here. As for Rogers, he needs to spend some of that Skydome money he saved and take this city over the top. There is fan interest still (lucky for the Jays) and fan/player PR, with some big market names might do this thing right at last.

He obviously (hopefully) has other moves planned that work in conjunction with this move. Right now he's improved the DH. It looks like he'll let the Cat walk and use Reed Johnson as full time LF. I think they want to resign Lily which gives them a better rotation than anyone in the East. The wild card is Wells. Again, I think both sides want to make a deal. I highly doubt JP will let Wells walk away at the end of the season for nothing. (Mind you, it scares me a bit and did anyone else notice in all the Jays ads for season tickets there are no pictures of Wells.) So the plan may also be to strengthen the team elsewhere by trading Wells.
But if they manage to sign Lily and keep Wells you have the best starting rotation in the East and then Johnson and Hill setting the table for Wells, Thomas, Glaus, Overbay and Rios or hit Rios second and move Hill down. That only leaves the 8 and 9 hitters, catcher and SS, which are traditionally defence first positions. With those first 7 in the order they don't need much of an upgrade in offense for 8 and 9 and can live with good defence there.
As I said it's too early in the game to judge this one move at face value. We've got to see the whole package.
First of all, players that are acquired in a trade are there to help a team either maintain or get a postseason spot. Frank Thomas mostly entered games as a pinch hitter and he was unavailable the last 2 months of the season or so. He was not even in the post season roster. He can be proud of the White Sox but how can he be proud of his ring? Same thing for Nomar. How can he be proud of his ring?benn said:

As for the steroid thing, I'm not implyibg that he took steroids. I'm just saying that players who hit 40 are known to have production decline. Manny compensate by using steroids. I was just saying that the penalty would be more harsh on Thomas if he ever decides to take steroids to maintain his performance level.

You're right there is no need for offence at the 8-9 spot, and it should be pretty easy to get decent defensive players to fill those positions. I don't know much about our minor league teams, but I am sure some of the rookies we saw last season could be called up. I was also wondering if Zaun is coming back next year? I always liked him as a player, and he does manage to come up with some pretty big hits sometimes. All I know is that JP is going to make some pretty interesting moves over the next few months, and I do trust him as a GM. The best part about all of this is that we are talking baseball in the middle of November when training camp is months away. Gotta love thatg baseball...

Also worth mentioning, Thomas has a 305 career BA, and there is a 1050 combined 2 year AB clause for the 3rd year option. So the Jays must feel good about his health.
Let's hope he starts parking those front leg, off balance moonshot dingers again and just relax here in Toronto where he can just play the game. He'll like it here. No pressure, and he will be a very, very big superstar in this city. No pun intended.

When did he ever have pressure? He's played for the White Sox and A's. Hardly teams where you are under the microscope.
I'm not sure how much he has left but 2yr/20mil isn't too terrible. A lot of mony for an old DH but at least the Jays are trying to improve upon a relatively decent year.
I just hope the rumors that he can be a bit of a negative clubhouse attitude is overblown.

If you consider the fact that Thomas won back to back AL MVP awards in 93 and 94, in Chicago of all places...I think that right there is pressure from the fans and media to duplicate those feats. Chicago is a very big baseball city and market imho. 2 teams, a rich and deep history..the Cubs..the drought..the Black Sox..ect...ect..Chi town is a baseball town no doubt.Don said:

I would like to point out New york Mets will be paying Moises Alou $8mil this coming season and he is older than Thomas and has been injury prone his entire career so if you look at it in perspective jays didn't really over pay Thomas comparing their numbers last season
