Wasn't he like five and five with an ERA over five? I think this is like a player/coach scenario.

A veteran presence for guarantee of only $3M that wanted to be here. So not much of a downside here.
Starts at #6-#8 on the depth start -- I assume he realizes that. But with Bieber going down to start for a bit, Berrios?, protecting Yesavage, he will get a chance within the few first few months.

If he gets to 65 innings, and starts earning those incentives, it likely means he has pitched decently well.

Perhaps the most disappointed by this is Lauer who goes down another peg after believing he should have had a shot to start in the opening 5 after last year.

Max' daughter wanted him to re-sign:

My guess is that Max will mostly spend time with his family until the end of the school year, and he'll be looking at game action in or after mid-June.

I see this as similar to late in Roger Clemens' career when he only played in home games, or the extended 'blow' Phil Jackson game to Shaq, where he was inactive each year from mid January until after the All Star break, effectively playing two shortened seasons each year, with a long playoff run expected.

The presence of Max Scherzer on the bench or in the clubhouse is invaluable. People keep saying that, but when you look at his career… with his World Series rings and Cy Young awards… This is a low risk move and there is nothing but upside.

It also means that rival teams in the AL can't have him, which has value in and of itself. One weakness of the 2026 Blue Jays is that they'll have difficulty improving at the trade deadline, given their lack of expendable prospects who have value to other GMs.

Better him with us then in Baltimore with his buddy Chris Bassett. After the signing, I watched Max Scherzer get interviewed by Blair & Barker. It was nice to see.

For those of you who check statistics on baseball-reference(dot)com, here's a feature I hadn't used before:

vpi-9.png

This may be a new feature. The previous similar link displayed information now accessible from separate links, (debut, school, etc.)

Here is everything you might want to know about Max Scherzer's baseball career.

The player Info is a very detailed article about the player's career. Information about extended absences from past seasons may be of particular interest to those of you who participate in draft pools or rotisserie leagues.

As a good example, Paul Molitor missed a lot of games early in his career:

but he was just incredibly unlucky.

Jack Clark never warmed up before games, so he was frequently out with muscle pulls in his legs.

After signing as a free agent with the Yankees before the 1988 season, Jack quickly earned the ire of George Steinbreiner by pulling a leg muscle during a home run trot in the last game of spring training.

Scherzer is a maniac, with him in the lineup they nearly knocked off the richest club in baseball. Before last season they were a bunch of "nice guys" who under achieved.

He was a pretty good lefty in 2021, 2022, 2024.... 2025 was a bad year and he had injuries.

Teams on average go through about 30 pitchers in a season so you are going to have these guys under contract in spring. And Jays do depth lefties in the organization so Mantiply makes sense.

Good chance Mantiply pitches for 2 or 3 teams this year, as teams rotate through depth guys that then go to waivers.

Not really a player acquisition. Mantiply was in the Jays' organization last summer. He was re-signed to a minor league deal after Arizona's obligations for his 2025 Major League pay cheque expired. To me, he's a near future candidate for a 'What's his name?' question in New Sports Trivia.

Agreed. I think he was instrumental in getting us as far as we did this past playoffs.
