Cards signed Fowler for over 80mil for 5 years. Good grief and someone said that due to Trump's effect a lot of players will go North to play! Faked news, indeed!

But the Smoak move was baffling
Smoak's problem isnt that he's a bad hitter, his problem is (and always will be) that he cant hit the curveball. He has too much of a long, looping swing.

I dont understand why he doesnt get involved in heavy training to fix all that.
Its isnt hard. All he has to do is hire some minor L. pitcher with a great curve who isnt going anywhere, and get him to throw him curveballs 8 hours a day for the entire off-season.

Thats how you get better

Just read the Jays offer to Bautista is their qualifying offer, 1 year term, basically take it or leave it!
Personally. if that is the attitude of Jays management, I think it sucks. If it was a veteran that they wanted to resign and he gave them the same attitude you would be hearing things like "team loyalty". Jose is a fan favorite and has been an important part of the Jays. The 5 year 125 or 150 million is out of the question but 2-3 years at 20 million per season would not be overpaying for a player that has been an important part of the organization for years. They overpaid Smoak, they are stuck with Upton and the balance(San Diego pays most of it), of his bloated salary. Shapiro, Atkins and the rest of the Cleveland rejects SUCK!

Bautista gambled and lost. Now you expect the Jays to let him off the hook? It's business, nothing personal. It's not like they're asking him to play for free. JB should get motivated to have a big year and earn his next contract.

They're not finished yet.

They will have less offense this year and it is unlikely the starters can do as well as last year. At some point the team will be doing poorly enough that he can now justify dumping Gibbons and bringing in Eric Wedge.

I think a 2-year term wouldve been more fair.

Especially since JB has been a hometown boy for so long

It's fun being an armchair GM. If Bautista signs a 2-year deal here and he's a bust in 2018, people in this thread will be saying 'I can't believe that they signed him for 2 years!!!'

And the opposite is also true, if he has 3 or 4 more good years in him, people will say why didnt you sign him long-term

Both you two make a good point.

Still, I'd just like to hear he's back as a BJ.
EE could be a little harder, but time will tell on either.
I your pic and saw the acronym "BJ" and had to take a break. :faint:

I think we have it all wrong.

The Jays don't need good players to win. We just need as many coaches as possible that used to work in Cleveland under Shapeero.

Jays sign Derek Shelton as quality control coach. He worked in Cleveland from 2005-2009. I feel much better now. Wedge is the only possible missing piece.

BTW, what did all these guys win in Cleveland?

The compensatory draft pick is really hurting JB on the free market. No team wants to give up a first rounder and sign a 36 year old to 2+ years. It's impacting EE too but less so.

JB's best bet is to eat some humble pie and sign a 1 year with the Jays and have a big comeback year, show he can stay healthy, and pull a Nelson Cruz or Ian Desmond.

At this point, I would prefer to sign both EE and JB to 3 or 4-year contract extensions.
Assuming they'll take it.

Give them both 4th year bonuses...etc....etc.

There's a huge risk EE or JB will stop producing this season or the next, but thats the chance you have to take.

Of course, I'm on my 9th vodka right now, so that could all be wrong

Or wait until the June draft, after which there will be no compensatory 1st round pick as per the new CBA.

so instead of signing a one year deal in the $12-17mln range for arguments sake....he waits around at his age, not playing competitive baseball and signs most likely a half year deal for an amount for probably less than half the previous numbers.

What team would sign him for a multiyear deal half way through a season when he hasn't played in 8 mos. He cant hang around spring training camps for reps without a deal either.

My guess is Bautista can get the 1 year deal on a lot of teams, and if that is the case why would he sign here. (other than this is where he would prefer to be)? Management has as much as said we really don't give a rat's ass about you. If they really want him they are going to have to up their offer, not a lot, but enough to stroke his ego.
I believe Bautista can still play. He was hurt a lot of last year and while his numbers weren't what the fan base is use to, they weren't all that awful either.
