My experience is that the banks are always looking for accounting skills, you may also try the management consulting firms who may be looking for consultants on accounting systems.

Good luck!

I lost mine 3 1/2 weeks ago and this afternoon was told my EI claim is being denied, basically because it was my fault I lost my job. I may be forced to give up trucking for a while and work at Timmie's and/or a few other places in order to pay the bills. :(

If you need to work there are a number of firms that specialize in contracts
If you have a CA or CMA , then you should be in demand
As a controller you may be in demand even without the designations
If your industry is financial services you will be in demand, manufacturing is a little tougher

http://www.lannickcontract.com/
http://www.ptcaccounting.com/
http://www.roberthalffinance.com/

There are a ton of these agencies & contract work pays pretty good (not as good as 5 years ago, but its possible you could get a boost above the old salary) & there can be tax advantages

If you just lost your job & got a package , you may wish to take a couple weeks (months for some) to unwind, golf, go on a trip, get you head ready for interviews & then get to work of looking for work

You may not have an up to date resume.
This guy can help.
Expensive, but worth every penny if you get a pay check rolling again

Good luck

The doctor is in
What type of severance package did you receive? If you have some somey saved and can hold out for awhile, roll it into an RRSP to max out your contribution room if you have any left. That way, you're getting a tax break in terms of a refund, and your investment will likely go up. If it gets really bad, you can always take it out again.

you would actually find one hopefully if you know the right websites to look for job. https://terb.cc is not one of `em. you should try www.jobbank.gc.ca for a change.

Comptroller is just US spelling for a controller.
The position used to be comptroller but they changed it's spelling to controller. However, one who is in the public sector is still referred to as a comptroller.

I am a Controller in the private sector and I'm offered job positions on a regular basis.......I am in high demand. To the OP, just do a search you should be able to come up with something decent within a month. I'm assuming you have an accounting designation - CA,CGA,CMA or CPA?

For the time being find a job doing anything just to keep paying the bills. Even as just an accountant will do. Send resumes through people you know, call friends see if they know someone who knows someone etc. Just keep digging.

Sometimes its not how good you are but who you and your friends know.

good luck

Hey Oldstud...it happens even to the best of us, so cheer up. My advice is: touch up your resume, get in touch with all of your references, ensure your interview suit is flawless (shiny shoes + cleaned navy blue suit).

Then practice practice on your job interview skills. I gotta stress on the last part - sometimes an interview just boils down to "fit" and if you appear hesitant, absent minded, forgetful or confused, then the "fit" will be all wrong to the interviewer.

There's a typical list of about 40-50 questions, and you simply have to know them cold...inside and out. Design 3 minute answers to them, tailor them to the company as appropriate and you'll be ahead of 70% of the other people out there. Good luck.

hey fellow terbites I am a product of this wonderful economy I lost my job today due to the company down sizing. I don't know if the board will allow me to do this but if there is anyone out there who needs a good controller for his or her company I would appreciate the opportunity. I honestly can;t afford to be out of work.. even though your know what my hobby is lol
Hang in there and never give up the search. It happened to me more than I care to remember. I am sure that you will land on your feet very soon.

My late Dad used to say that any honest work is respectable, no matter what type of work it is.

Remember Will Smith in the movie, "Pursuit of Happiness", and remember that, in this case, it DOES happen in real life.

What is with you people? I lost my job several months ago, and while I am no longer "flush" it will be a LONG time before I am outta cash. I personally think this recession will be a bad one I hope I am wrong, but I just don't see the massive fundamental problems being resolved. Consumer spending may NEVER recover to it's previous insane level, so major restructuring will have to be done to obtain full employment in a no or low growth economy.

Thanks jtk. I'm even considering taking a stab at Yuk-Yuks downtown's amateur night one of these Tuesdays. Coming up with 5 mins of 'original' material shouldn't be too difficult.

Just a thought OS47 but if you have any experience at all with insolvency, there are lots of trustees looking to bring people aboard. With the economy bottoming out, naturally, they clean up and are busier than ever these days.

I'm deeply concerned about this. We still haven't hit bottom on this economic downturn. I fear that when we do and things begin to pick up, it's going to be a long slow road to recovery (a "recovery" that may never return to pre-downturn levels). It could be the end of an era -our [North America's] best days behind us. There are seismic economic shifts occuring right now that will be felt for decades. Debt at the individual and government level has to be reigned in, but that is going to require a complete overhaul in lifestyle.

-what's left of large industries are leaving or going bankrupt
-we're up to our necks in credit/debt (government and citizens)
-new internet mediums have turned traditional business models upsidedown (the free music/porn/movie/software revolution), arguably making them unprofitable or less profitable
-we have a growing underclass (the bottom of the barrel in society is outbreeding the elite at a rate never seen before in the modern world; the educated and ambitious -genetically more capable - aren't having kids while welfare moms are having dozens)

All these things are going to have a devastating affect on the economy.

Well guess what, you are in the minority of Canadians who actually save some money. Canadians, on average, spend like 103% of their earnings. The only country that is worse is (surprise!) the USA.

Being prepared is good. But how will that save you if things remain bad, not for months, but years.
