I think this is the OPPOSITE of langeweile's view - that the US, due to our cooler relationship, has played hardball with our industries.
This is CLEARLY what she's saying, otb. The bans are *US* actions, not ours.

Perhaps we SHOULD be US-bashing if they're going to play games with trade. Fortunately, the WTO is starting to take notice of US protectionism. :)

I blame the liberals, too - Canada is ill-positioned to have poor relationships with the US. That having been said, the US administration has acted in a very petty manner, and doesn't take any nay-saying on our part at all well, whether it's wanting to talk about trade protectionism or the invasion of Iraq.

The liberals AND Dubya have both contributed, to the detriment of everyone on both sides of the border. Frankly, I hope the protesters let them BOTH hear it. Both deserve major embarrassment.

The USA is not the only country to play protectionism with their good or play games with trade.
Canada is closing it's borders to US chicken and cheese by having a quota system in place that protects Canadian farmers.

For years the EU has subsidized their farmers. The much touted airbus was able to survive with initial goverment support.
The reason why those countries have not been hold accountable yet is, that most subsidies are not as open and blatant and are hidden in tax codes or quotas or by goverment buybacks of excess product (in case of agricultural products).
To claim that the USA is the only country doing this, ignores the truth and is a further syptom of your bias against the USA.

I was looking for the article surrounding the Kyoto issue. I was not able to find it, but I will continue to search.

BTW,

Layton is as close to a communist, that you can find outside of Russia.
His ideas on social issues are as extreme as anything I have read in a while. He is an antagonist anad his ideas are not good for Canada, IMHO.

This is interesting:

OTTAWA (AFP) - Hopes for early mass protests in the streets of Ottawa on the eve of Tuesday's visit by US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) fizzled out, as journalists outnumbered demonstrators.

I'm sure the Left will redeem itself.

The big rally is supposedly tonight at 5, although I've heard there's a severe winter storm warning for Ottawa - not that a little snow would keep people away, but add freezing rain to that and you've got a problem.

I think you're right in your analysis of who and what is to blame for the recent cooling in relationship between the two countries Ranger but I don't think those out protesting today will care about any of that. All they'll really care about is telling GWB how unpopular he and his policies are with them.
Well, I think they'll certainly let Martin hear about it, too.

Who cares? The WTO has just SLAMMED the US. :) Clearly, they think that the US is far more of an offender than we are.

You keep looking.

And Dubya is as close to being a fascist, that you can find outside Nazi Germany. His party's use of propaganda, most of which is outright lies, is as extreme as any I've seen in a while. He is interested in promoting US global hegemony at whatever cost to the people of the rest of the world, many of which he has labelled "terrorists". "You're either with us, or against us." The Patriot Act is the single most appalling western law to come into force in recent memory, and reminiscent of laws put into effect during the reign of the Nazis. He is an antagonist anad his ideas are not good for ANYBODY, IMHO.

LOL
By international law, he's certainly liable for arrest.
The US committed itself not to wage aggressive war many decades ago.
That would be funny.

Still waiting.

Oh, some little tidbits, while we're waiting for langeweile's research:
"We have before us the opportunity to forge for ourselves and for future generations a new world order - a world where the rule of law, not the law of the jungle, governs the conduct of the nations. When we are successful - and we will be - we have a chance at this new world order, an order in which a credible United Nations can use its peacekeeping role to fulfill the promise and vision of the UN's founders."
- POTUS George H.W. Bush, January 1991

Twelve years after George H.W. Bush fought a war to defend the sovereignty of Kuwait, his son George W. violated the sovereignty of Iraq and invaded and occupied the whole country without plausible provocation, legal justification, or Security Council approval. His administration had formally adopted a U.S. national strategy of maintaining absolute military superiority over any rival power or combination of powers on the planet in perpetuity - an absurd ambition, but no less serious for all that.

"Frankly, sanctions have worked. Saddam has not developed any significant capability with respect to weapons of mass destruction. He is unable to project conventional power against his neighbours."
- US Secretary of State Colin Powell, February 2001

Sad. What was it otb said? Ah, yes - "none so blind".

Ironic that you use that phrase "and the truth will set you free" when we're talking about Bush and his administration. LOL Very ironic. :D

I see you have nothing to say to oppose my assertion.
I must say I'm mystified that you agree with me.
LOL
:D
Oh, BTW, those who know me would say I'm decidedly right of centre. Your lack of comprehension showing again. LOL

Oh come now, we all know that the military firepower doubled in Canada when Bush's Secret Service detail arrived ( a couple of weeks ago) - you'd never get close ;-)

Canadian snipers are among the best in the world.
:)
Hey, summary military discipline works in the States, why wouldn't it here? We don't need Guantanamo, just - like that Marine - a bullet.
"He's dead now."

Fortunately, most of us aren't as war-mongering as those living in the States, and I use that term in all seriousness.
Bush's visit will (and should) come and go with nothing but a few relatively peaceful protests.

So much for American moral superiority.
