Agreed. Everyone knows the Molly Hatchet was the greatest southern rock band. :encouragement:
In spite of getting knocked for being an Ersatz Lynrd Skynrd , I thought they were pretty good.
Singer had a life history of ghastly health problems. They seemed like real troopers.

I agree with many of the nominations in this thread... But I am surprised one fact about Queen has not been brought up.

If one were using chart success as a criteria, Queen remain (to my knowledge) the only band in history to not only have number one singles written collectively as a group and by a combination of two or more members... But also each individual member has written multiple number one singles. That surely has to carry a lot of weight to their place in the pantheon of the greatest.

Highly subjective- for example I wouldn't put The Who in a landfill as it's toxic, self-absorbed bullshit. Where does the Red Hot Chilly Peppers fit? Or REM, Depeche Mode, STP or even the Smashing Pumpkins? The Cure defined and influenced a whole generation and the Police showed that great music needs no gimmicks nor needs to be overly complicated. In that they're closer to Elvis' Sun Records days(the true rock-and-roll) than anyone. Anyway. I'm beginning to think, in my old age, that such lists are useless.

I remember seeing this blonde rocker chick named Jamie Lee at the old Locomotion on eglinton years ago for dances. She always danced to April Wine. aaaahhhh memories.....sigh.....
I remember the old Loco the very first HJ I ever got in a SC. Hot chick who always wore a schoolgirl kilt. Can't say that I remember Jamie Lee though. Those were the good old days - old Loco and the Cannonball.

Directly above the center of the earth
I can't believe that in 7 pages of this thread, nobody mentioned Genesis. This shows me what a bunch of know-nothings you guys are. In my expert opinion, everything they did up to and including 'And then there were three' was worthy. Seeing them was my first concert experience. The live album Seconds Out, was an amalgam of the tour. At one point there was a drum duet, with Phil Collins (of course), and Chester Thompson, a drummer who accompanied them on the tour. Watching the two of them drum in perfect sync was a wonder to behold. I can only imagine how many hours of practice it took to reach that level of precision. On the album it sounds like a drum solo.

After 'And then there were three' they got greedy. Their music became worthy of AM pop charts (not a compliment).

Even the write up in the Rock Hall of Fame said they were always 're-inventing' themselves.

I don't think they are the greatest rock band ever, but for many years they were my greatest rock band (in my expert opinion).

There was (maybe still is) a tribute band that would cross Canada every few years. I saw one of their concerts at the Danforth music hall.

Here is a quickie quiz for you- several musicians have been inducted into the Rock Hall twice, either as a member of two bands, or as a band member and also as a solo artist. But there is one musician who has been inducted three times. It's not an obscure name. Who is it?

I agree, highly subjective topic. However, as in many other topics, your lack of knowledge is astounding.

Tommy, Who's Next, Quadrophenia. Back,to back, to back. All classic, highly influential and ahead of their time. The widely regarded all time greatest bass player, an all-time greatest rock vocalist, and the guitar playing and especially the conceptualization of Pete Townshend. And Keith was a show unto himself. Only the Beatles top them.

I have no problem with somebody not liking them, but to totally disregard and have no regard for their impact and talent, I could not stay silent. They put Queen to shame.

They were awesome. Although huge in Britain, I think it took longer to be appreciated in NA. Probably not until Peter left. I saw his first concert here as a solo act at Maple Leaf Gardens. Very theatrical. I loved how is eyes lit up and glowed in the dark during Moribund the Burgermeister.

Vocally, Queen is far superior to The Who. Freddy was a helluva better singer than anyone The Who fronted. For pure musicianship they're right up there with the best bands, without a doubt. As I said, highly subjective. Tommy was a vanity project and, in my opinion, not that good at all. The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper came before it, and while a vanity project as well, it was brilliantly executed. Tommy was a decent attempt at twist of the old musicals, certainly not as good as opera. Maybe as good as Fred Astaire's Shall We Dance? Not as original, visually and lyrically brilliant as Top Hat. The Rocky Horror Picture Show would be my equivalent, I suppose. Again, personal preference.
