Number of albums sold is not the only measure of greatness. Some of those talentless hacks of today (who are ONLY the face and voice the record company factories push) have sold MILLIONS...but can sing only somewhat better than how we sing in the shower.

There's a reason why NO BAND wanted to be on the same stage as VH back in the day. No band wanted to play 'after' their set. They'd play before them (maybe), but NO ONE wanted to play after them.
As for Zep...DON'T GIVE A SHIT WHAT ANYONE SAYS!!! There's a good reason why Soooooooooooo many bands were influenced by them. Even that terrible rip-off, Greta Van Fleet, (who claim to even barely know Zep). These 2 bands that you speak so lowly about, have, between the two of the, been responsible for MILLIONS of ppl picking up an instrument. This is true of almost every rock band who've had existed since they hit the scene respectively.

Haven't read through this, but have The Police, Rush, Triumph, Webster, been mentioned?
You're right, whoever said it...I wouldn't consider Crimson as a rock band, now would I consider Zappa. These 2 outfits where not about writing quick 3 to 5 minute hit singles. These outfits were full of musicians who appreciated the art of experimentation. Not what the record companies want. LMAO

Maiden? Priest? Black Crows? U2? (been re-listening to these guys A LOT this week again. Man! I was a TOTAL Hard Rock guy when someone introduced me to them when they came out. I was dead set against liking any band who didn't have 10 min BLISTERING guitar solos! LOL. I've been HOOKED since their 1st note!)

Some of these bands I've mentioned may not have been huge commercial success, but commercial success don't mean shit to me...

I agree commercial success is only part of it. And I'm not knocking Van Halen they were one of the best. The point I was making was it was truly idiotic to say that the Stones suck ass. Because by most accounts they are easily a top 10 rock band all time. That's all I got to say.

Now that I think of it, All-time great rocker list should include Elvis (not Costello). Maybe Chuck Berry as well.

Spent a lot of the past week listening to Styx songs in depth for the first time. Starting to become a really big fan of their stuff now. Didnt really appreciate it until now. I am surprised that no one has tried to make a musical out of their catalog. Its quite conducive for the musical genre. Much better than ABBA or Jersey boys really.

Another underrated group as far as I'm concerned is April Wine. They have a quality discography with longevity and relevance. Being based on Canada's east coast really kept them under the radar. This song is rock n' roll gold.

Sorry Kirk, don't like Tommy Shaw. He can't hold a melody on guitar and his songs are syrupy. Like getting hit in the face with a Swifter Mitt. They were better without him.

This is the one that got me listening. I only know a couple of their softer ballads before this. Odd how Tommy Shaw seemed to write the fast paced songs while Dennis DeYoung ended up writing the ballads.

I remember seeing this blonde rocker chick named Jamie Lee at the old Locomotion on eglinton years ago for dances. She always danced to April Wine. aaaahhhh memories.....sigh.....

I beg to differ. The Allman Brothers Band was the greatest southern rock band. And not that far off from being one of the greatest rock bands ever.

Love Reign O'er me would be a tough song for any singer to do. Incredibly demanding.

Daultry, in his prime, was in the top 5 of rock singers and he owned Love Reign O'er me. It's a great song which I love hearing, but in fairness no-one, can expect a guy in his 70's to hit it 100 percent. Hell, very very few singers can do that song even if they were 20 years old.
