3 consecutive albums in a row that are all in the greatest albums of all time.

Tommy (first rock opera)
Who's Next (considered the first heavy metal album)
Quadrophenia (not any firsts--just amazing rock)
Tommy could not have been written without Sgt Pepper.

LOL...I love Motörhead...The band’s spelling even autocorrects to provide the two dots over the “o” thing...but they have no place on this list.
Why not? Definitely one the most influential metal bands ever. Without Motörhead there would never have been Metallica or dozens of other popular metal bands. It’s not always about how many hit records you have but also how many younger musicians you have influenced.

It’s a sub genre of popular music that is traceable back to Led Zep which is traceable back to Cream which is treaceable back to Hendrix which is traceable back to Sgt Pepper.

They can’t be on the same list as the Beatles and the Stones.

IMHO, Frank Zappa’s Freak Out influenced The Beatles Sgt Pepper but Zappa’s album did not have the same widespread cultural impact.

Generally agree with this genealogy of metallurgy....until we get to the "Hendrix which is traceable back to Sgt. Pepper" bit. Linking Sgt. Pepper to heavy metal through Hendrix is going to be tough sledding, I think - about as reasonable as the contention (elsewhere in this thread) that 'Who's Next' is considered the first heavy metal album.

Recall an interview with EC where he was confronted by the notion (or was it an accusation?) that Cream was responsible for heavy metal. As I recall, Clapton demurred politely and responded "Oh, I thought it was the Zepp".

I’d link Hendrix to Sgt Pepper insofaras Pepper opened the door to what was possible within what had up until then been understood as being within the confines of popular music. I would credit Hendrix as being the first to develop that idea into what we might now call Heavy Metal.

Maybe they belong on a greatest metal bands ever list, but certainly not on greatest rock band list.

I think people need to realize that just because a particular band is their personal favourite (to which they are entitled) that does not necessarily make that band the greatest in the world.

That's interesting. I hope they put out a good album.

For what it's worth, pretty much every band in my list, in fact, all of them, are well past their prime when it comes to putting out respectable new albums.

U2's last 2 albums sucked LARGE, and I'm a huge U2 fan.

Roger Waters, I love Floyd and Rogers in particular. Absolutely incredible musician and I will see him play live in concert every time I can, but his last album a couple of years ago wasn't that great. (To put it politely.) But God bless him, he's still going strong and puts on THEE best live show ever of any band I've ever seen.

The Stones, I don't think they've done anything of really great since "Some Girls" in 1978. (But they have put out a lot of work over the years I will admit with some flashes of brilliance along the way.)

But all of them (if they are still alive) can still put on fucking amazing live shows with piles of content to draw from. But new content? Not so much. Creativity in rock and roll (and many things) is a young man's game. As you get older, you gain experience, but you lose that "devil may care" attitude that brings with it the ability to take risks. Besides, it's hard to be pissed off at the man when you have shit loads of money in the bank. (You basically have become "the man".)
Think you're missing 1981's Tattoo, that was the Stones last pure album in my opinion.
I agree with you on U2 their last really good album was probably All That You Can't Leave Behind (2000). But man what a discography overall, they definitely deserve consideration for a top 10 list. I got Joshua Tree as one of the greatest albums ever produced.

If you are going to include bands like CCR, Van Halen, Neil Young etc, then the greatest southern rock band of all time Lynyrd Skynyrd deserves honourable mention.

Lynyrd Skynyrd might be the 2nd greatest southern rock band.
