2007/2008 preseason....

Leafs lost 3-2 to Edmonton in OT. Pogge played a solid game, but let a very soft one in during the OT. Newberry played well, the same problems are clearly evident on defence, though.

overall, i thought the team looked better conditioned this year... especially Steen, Stajan, Poni, and Antro.

Preseason Home Opener Thursday Sept. 20 vs. Phoenix Coyotes...

1) Toskala let the first shot on net go in. which is a non-issue at this point (i don't know why they make a stupid big deal about it in the media)
2) I don't see much promiss from any rookies, though Tlusty had a good game. I don't expect any of them to crack the lineup.
3) Wellwood's injured already. (doesn't take much) Colaiacovo looked slow.

playoff is a possibility. but, it depends on the big $$$ guys playing to their worth. (Kaberle, McCabe, Kubina, Toskala, Blake & Tucker)

Watching the Sens choke: Priceless

Okay, I'm lost on this "Sen's Choking" thing ... Theres only one team last year that wouldn't trade places with them (The Ducks)

So if the Sens "choked" last year , what did the Leafs do ?

(Go Wings go )

actually, if you have watched that final series between Ducks/Sens, you'd understand why the Sens choked. they clearly lost their focus when they got to the big dance, the grand ball, the series everyone plays for.

it's supposed to bring out the best in your team, especially the best players... where was Alfie, Spez, and the big Heat during that series? Volchie stopped hitting, so did Fisher... they all choked.

there was much better game brought by Ottawa agains Pitt, and Buff.

I don't think they "choked" they got beat by a bigger faster team , I thought the ducks were better
so if a team doesn't answer the Bell they choked .. making teams missing the playoffs .. regular season chokers ?

ok- you are right. as a 4th placed team in the east, they can't be viewed as better than Detroit, which was able to better compete with Anaheim. In that regard, they did not choke, rather they played 'over there abilities' against Buffalo... or maybe Buffalo choked on Ottawa?

or how about San Jose, they had the best winning percentage against Anaheim in the regular season... could they be the real playoff chokers? they lost to Detroit.

funny thing is, the more you get involved in the statistics, the further you get from the truth. Ottawa did not choke, though they appeared to have 'choked' as their key assits to their team was completely shut down in the final series.

i guess my way of seeing them choking is more along the non-competitiveness of the teammates... they just weren't playing the same as the earlier series. especially Alfie and Volchenkov.

Well, I think "choke" is a term applicable to under-achieving reasonable expectations, when you get to the top ,say , 4 best teams one will win the others don't neccesarily "choke"

Sometimes I don't get the Alfie criticism.. Ottawa is a team that wants the Cup .. starting with the Prez.. (much like Detroit, they trade, build etc. with a Cup in mind)
So in a Go Leafs Go thread... Alfie Lead Ottawa to the Finals.. Yzerman has lead Detroit to Cups..
If leafs Really are aiming at a cup (Stanely not protective) ... (that was hard to type)
Then managements chosen Leader Mats Sundin Has choked and failed miserabley and underachieved by missing playoffs since the strike , compared to Ottawa's chosen leader.. (Never mind Yzerman !)

*Note: I only mention Yzerman .. cause .. well Stevie gives credibility to everything !! ... :)

you are correct about Yzerman... he's won cups with alot less of a supporting cast than what Alfie has.

I do think Mats is a better leader, or maybe similar... though, look at the supporting leadership Ottawa has in Spezza, Comrie and Heatley, physical leadership from players like Fischer, Neil, Kelly and Volchenkov. they do have a roster built for a cup. much better than what we even saw in Buffalo last season (prez trophy winners).

this year it seems the top stacked teams are a bit of the same old... Ottawa, Anaheim, and Detroit.

Exactly !! .. and the Leafs... not so much .. and how can the supposed "hockey capital" of the world stand for their team to not give a crap about a cup...

Oh yeah .. the leafs ... built for cash .. not for cups !

Like that THEFAN tv commerical says: as long as the fans keep buying the tickets, they don't have to build a team that can win....and then added: either leaf fans are the dumbest on the planet or the most loyal.....which does NOT bode well for any cup contending team in my lifetime.....

When Ballard was boss, it was said the leafs are aheart-attack away from the cup..
in reality the leafs are 1 season in the red away from a cup...

so it ain't gonna happen

How about this? Eugene Melnyk has a message to the Leafs- get into the playoffs, why don't you? It's hurting the rivalry because you can't compete.

Melnyk to Leafs: Get better
Sens owner says rivalry healthy

By TERRY KOSHAN, SUN MEDIA

Eugene Melnyk has a novel idea to spice up the Battle of Ontario.

How about if the Maple Leafs got into the playoffs for a change?

"You would like to see the Leafs competitive," Melnyk, the owner of the Ottawa Senators, said. "I think they are making changes that will make them more competitive. They have to. We'll see what happens. (The rivalry) does lose a little lustre, but it is still there and it will continue. But hopefully it never gets reversed and we keep winning."

He (Melnyk) could help by ordering a trade of Heatley and Spezza for Wade Belak... But JFJ peobably would turn that down anyway

You are correct. NHL would fine Toronto for going way over the cap. I think JFJr knows better.
