Great editorial in the Globe and Mail yesterday that sums it up rather perfectly.
The key issue of the election should have been the economy and the financial health of Canadians. On that score, the Conservative Party has a solid record. Hardly perfect but, relatively speaking, better than most. However, the election turned into a contest over something else: a referendum on the government’s meanness, its secretiveness, its centralization of power in the most centralized Prime Minister’s Office in history, its endless quest for ever more obscure wedge issues, and its proclivity for starting culture wars rather than sticking to the knitting of sound economic and fiscal stewardship. It turned this election into a referendum on the one-man show that has become the Harper government

He can look back on parts of his record with pride, but he has undone himself and his party with a narrowness of vision and a meanness of spirit on a host of issues, from voting rights to crime and punishment to respect for science to respect for the courts. The topper has been how this election campaign was sidetracked into an artificial, American-style, culture war over niqabs and “barbaric cultural practices.” The spectacle of a prime minister seemingly willing to say anything, or demonize anyone, in an attempt to get re-elected has demeaned our politics. And while it may have firmed up the old Reform base, it also solidified the Harper Conservative Party as a party of, by and for that base.

Harper is just a nasty piece of work and he needs to go.
Hoping for a liberal minority so we can see how Justin makes out. I don't want him to get too carried away - especially with new taxes.

At least with his dad Pieerre Trudeau you have respect for him when his said no to the provinces and said" PM of Canada job is not a head waiter for the provinces!! No, according CBC, which is probably the most accurate with threehundreandeight's work there, the liberals are up by 5% or about 20 seats.

When Chretien became PM he sought the wise counsel of Mitchell Sharp.
When Trudeau the Elder became PM he sought the wise counsel of Lester Pearson.
Mitchell Sharp should have been PM but it was a Francophone's turn to be leader of the Liberal Party.
I'm a Canadian citizen, not an American. I live in the US now but I'm not an American. I voted by mail, registered online with Elections Canada, received my ballot by mail, and sent it in a week and a half back or so.
I can still do that another four years, if I don't return to Canada by then I will still be able to vote by showing up in person at an advance poll, which I will make an effort to do.
The previous gov't also either froze or cut transfer payments to the provinces. And didn't have a global meltdown to deal with.
The transfers were actually increased back to normal levels under the Conservatives.
I'm off to vote against Harper, even if it risks bankrupting the country once Larue and his massive taxable income leave the country.

Well said but we're going to pay a lot for that change $$$. Especially here in Ontario where Wynne will gain even more power. If the Liberals win I hope it's a minority. Giving any party free reign is never a good thing. You need to represent a broader range of the Canadian electorate. I don't know what the polls said going into the election? I'm guessing it was close to this - 35% for the Libs - 30% Con and 29% NDP. Those are pretty shitty numbers if you think about it. Only 35% are in favor of one party. So basically you'll have over 60% of voters not in favor of this newly elected government. So that 35% is dragging the rest of use with them.
