How relevent are these quotes? The vast majority are from more than 150 years ago, when the western world considered you were evil incarnate if you were even the wrong type of Christian. The most recent 70 plus years. Even Rosevelt's and Hoover's quotes could easily be construed as an attempt to encourage a common ground for people to work with.

The modern west is officially accepting of an individual's right to follow whatever faith they choose as long as it doesn't interfere with other's rights. I find it strange that the current president's quotes jive with those of the founders of the country, considering that the majority of the opinions of the founders (on slavery, equality, and tolerance of diversity for example) would result in a modern public figure being severely chastised. Every other president since the 50's has realized that the US is no longer a place reserved only for Christians and have at least appeared to publically support the separation of church and state. Although I was not hugely impressed with Kerry's performances in the debates, (they only looked good by comparison) his answer to a question in the public forum was a good answer. Essentially he stated that the POTUS job is to reflect the views of the people, not enforce his personal views.


Fundamentalist and Evangelical Christians do exist and have a high level of support in parts of the US. Bush wants support from them so whether or not he belives in "the Rapture" he will run with their views, as long as they are not significantly different from his own in terms of official policy. I would love to see some facts that show that:

a) fundamentalism does not exist in Christianity,
b) there is not a powerful fundamentalist lobby in the states,
c) that W. is not fundamentalist or,
d) the majority of fundamentalist do not support israel and a Jewish presence in Jerusalem as a means to allow the second coming.

Until someone disputes the issue with some support, I will consider opinons against the article as "silly" or "extremism"

Interesting quotes langeweile. More than a few of which would be political suicide if uttered today, especially Jefferson's that Christianity is the only religion that can change the heart. Ouch.

Still, in all these quotes I didn't see one where a past president had claimed God had specifically called on him to run and save the country, as George W. Bush has. Perhaps I missed something.

Lincoln also said, and I'm paraphrasing, "In every great conflict each side claims to move by the will of God. Both may be, but one must be, wrong. God can not be for and against the same thing at the same time."

Said during the beginning of the Civil War, Lincoln was trying to remind both the North and South the dangers of evoking God to justify a cause.
