Fuji's right. Despite all the short comings of democracy, it’s still the best political system.

Some people only support democracy when they get the outcome they wanted.

'Least dangerous' political system may be a better way of rating Democracy.

Some people only support democracy when they get the outcome they wanted.
Teabaggers are a perfect specimen of this....:)

A "benevolent dictatorship" seems to be working well for Singapore but then the Singaporeans are a bunch of intelligent people.
LOL, don't be fooled by their Singaporean English. Their mindset are too "Chinese" and incompatible to many "Western Standards", say democracy.

Well they are thriving, all their citizens have Universal Healthcare and they can retire with a pension at 50 so they are doing something right!....

Basic Poli Sci 101, but it's hard to maintain from one generation to the next. BD is considered the best and is often part of a first year debate in most Poli Sci programs.

The only good pics I have of Havana are near the Capitolio - just for the tourists it seems (the architecture is interesting, the old workmanship is outstanding, even for un-renovated structures - like the Roman Forum, they mark a time before La Revolucion when the city flourished).

I stayed just outside of Havana but travelled by bus and cab, so I saw a good cross-section of it. Most of Havana appears decrepit, which is a shame.

Your statement may prove my point - no foreign or domestic investment, just foreign aid.

Communism is an analogistic idealogy/system, just like the 1950s cars that abound in Cuba.
Next time you go to Cuba, visit old Havana. You can sit and have a mojito at Hemmingways old hangout.

A key criteria for a suceessful "benevolent dictatorship" is an intelligent and hard working citizenry.

So what happens if this enlightened despot ends up going a little funny in the head?

Then it would no longer be a "benevolent dictatorship". Actually, Singapore (if that is our ideal model) is more than a one wo(man) rule. So, if numero uno is somehow incapacitated, there are other able people ready, willing and able to take the helm.

In that case, the PRC should get 1.3 billion votes at the U.N.

I guess the world is better off with the U.N. (as imperfect as it is) than without. At least, it brings the motley crew to the same table.
And Toronto should have way more voting power than PEI, or most of the Provinces. As the Burmese, Chinese, Soviet-ese and many many others have discovered, not giving them voting power doesn't make 'the people' disappear. Or even stay passive. We've got little reason to be smug ourselves; it took the Europeans many centuries to get smart.

The UN may not at the moment be any better than having the camel piss outta the tent, but even that's a big step in toilet training.

Isn't old Havana near or by the Capitolio? There were some very nicely decorated places, hotels and restaurants. Some were being renovated as we spoke (I lent a worker a light for his cigarette).

I saw a street named after Hemingway in Miramar while searching for a casa to rent.

Do you know the name of Hemingway's old hang out? I hope I get another chance to have that Mohito sooner than later my friend. Thanks.

Dunno about that in the Fine city/Asia's version of the state of Israel since their "pension" are mainly DC, 401K style plan. And their health care are two-tiered and they do have robust, profitable Medical Tourism over there.

BTW, would not be surprised American joker like you becoming Michael Peter Fay, getting the JCP and feeling its intensity like the Woodpecker banging its head.

When I go to Cuba, I usually stay (with my SO !!) in an all inclusive in Varadero or Jimaca. I take a taxi to the harbour (boardwalk) in Havana and go into town from there. Hemmingway's old hangout is El Floridita located on the Obispo street #557 at the corner with Monserate street in Old Havana and close to Parque Central.

Fuji, just one thing... You're making one simple mistake about the UN, which is a very common one made these days. Listen very carefully:

"The U.N. was not created to take us to Heaven, it was created to keep us from going to Hell."

Note, Hell in this case, isn't corruption, it isn't the strong lording it over the weak, it isn't rights abusers sitting on councils to protect human rights. Hell is nuclear holocaust. Until we have a replacement to keep nuclear holocaust at bay, the UN is a must. When our species (note I said SPECIES, i.e. all of us) needs a tool against nuclear holocaust, it better damn well be there because we may not have another chance. Until there is a replacement, the UN must remain, warts and all.

Until another nuclear holocaust threatens us, the UN will be very very unproductive and do basically nothing. We all hope and pray when that when that day comes (and it will, there are thousands and thousands of nukes still in the world and more than enough folks willing to use them), the UN may be all that stands between extinction and survival.

The UN would work emminently better if all the social engineering work took place outside of it and the UN kept to doing what it was supposed to do but it is what it is. Notwithstanding this fact, let's not throw out the baby with the bathwater.

Cheers!

Havana is far from Varadero. I mean, I had to take a bus for an hour and half to where I was which was 12.5 km from central Havana. From our hotel, we took a 20 minute transit bus ride to 'chica cafe', lol.
