Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri said on Tuesday that Lebanon will ask the United Nations to halt the probe of an international tribunal into the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, the pro-Syrian Lebanese newspaper a-Diar reported on Wednesday.

According to the report, Hariri said on Tuesday that he intends on giving up on the findings of the tribunal "for the interests of the country."

Hariri was quoted as saying that the Lebanese government will turn to the UN to "work to stop the activities of the tribunal and to cancel the work protocol between the government and the tribunal."

Moreover, the newspaper quoted Hariri as saying that he will stand by Hezbollah if the group is found guilty by the tribunal, and that Lebanon will not support any of the tribunal's further activities.

Hopefully this report is not accurate - otherwise Hezbollah has effected a coup without too much blood being spilled.

Why does this surprise you. Hezbaollah has a private army which is better armed than the Lebanese armed forces, has an effective veto in Lebanon and exercises de fact control of the south. The government and the UN leave them alone notwithstanding UN Resolution 1701.

It's not as easy as it sounds, Lebanon is a patchwork of sects and groups all vying for their own interests. The problem of Lebanon is Lebanese politicians, who dont seem to care about the overall good of the nation but that of their own group, check out Hezballah's buddies in parliament and you will find Michel Aoun, Maronite Christian, former head of the national army and during the civil war vowed to launch a "war of liberation"against the Hezballah's masters the Syrians.

So Hezballah are just one bad part of a whole rotten bunch that cant seem to get past their own petty allegiances for the greater good.
