Gene Pitney wrote "Hello Mary Lou" for Ricky Nelson and it became a big hit, then he put out his own cover version shortly afterwards.

Not sure if it's been mentioned but I. My opinion the best album of various covers selected by the original artists:

"Groovy Kind Of Love", written by Carole Bayer Sager and Toni Wine was originally done by Diane & Annita in 1965 before the Mindbenders had a hit with their cover.

"Don't Look Back" was a minor hit for the Temptations in 1965, it became more widely known with Peter Tosh and Mick Jagger doing their cover version in 1978.

My favorite, slightly satirical cover. Britney Spears 'Oops I Did It Again' covered by metal band Children Of Bodom.

A cover of 'Wicked Game', originally by Chris Issac, covered by HIM. I prefer the original, but I find this cover interesting.

Another cover by HIM, original is Neil Diamond's 'Solitary Man'.

'Nothing Else Matters' by Metallica, covered by Apocalyptica. By far the most melodic, beautiful version of this song that has been done, and my favorite cover of all time.

Honourable mention, the long time favorite of many, 'I Love Rock'n'Roll'. Originally done by The Arrows, covered by Joan Jett to great success.
