"Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town" written by Mel Tillis was originally a top ten country hit for Johnny Darrell in 1967.
Kenny Rogers & The First Edition made a smart decision to cover this song, they recorded it in just one take and had a giant hit in 1969.

There isn't a Youtube for the original song, but here's an mp3 you can play. To download, right-click and click "Save link as...".

The Donays were an R&B group from Detroit who recorded "Devil In His Heart" in 1962 but it wasn't a hit. The Beatles heard the song and covered it on their second album in 1963 as "Devil In Her Heart".

Blood, Sweat & Tears - with Canada's David Clayton-Thomas on vocals.
Their self titled second album had 3 huge hits and won the Grammy award for Best Album, beating out the Beatles "Abbey Road".

In 1958, Johnny O'Keefe was Australia's first rock star with his hit "Wild One". It was later covered by several artists, I like Teenage Head's version from their Frantic City album in 1980.

One of Layne Staley's last recordings he did....this song is from the soundtrack of the movie 'The Faculty'. Awful movie but love this cover.

Dallas Frazier wrote several rock and roll and country hits like "Alley Oop", "Mohair Sam", "There Goes My Everything" and "Elvira".
Here's his original version of "Elvira" which he recorded in 1966. The Oak Ridge Boys had a huge hit with their cover of the song.

I listen to this song regularily. Does it make me gay? It makes me feel gay and pretty. Cyndi Lauper covered it.
