This thread is too long, can't remember if I already posted this one.
Merry Clayton did the original version of "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss) back in 1963 but it wasn't a hit until covered by Betty Everett the following year.

Speaking of Merry Clayton, she does the awesome background vocals in the Stones "Gimme Shelter". She was the first to cover the song, really does an intense version.

Waiting for new pics, Kyra - it's going to be tough to outdo those amazing ones where you're perched on the table but I know you can.

Barry McGuire, who was known for "Eve Of Destruction", was the first to record "California Dreamin'" which had backing vocals and music later used for The Mamas & The Papas version which became the hit.
Barry had introduced them to producer Lou Adler and he's mentioned in the song "Creeque Alley" which told the story of how The Mamas & The Papas were formed.

Jimmy Webb's great song "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" was originally recorded by Johnny Rivers in 1965, it wasn't a hit until Glen Campbell covered it in 1967.

Isaac Hayes performed a great version of it in 1969 on his classic "Hot Buttered Soul".

Here's the original version of "Rave On" by Sonny West which didn't become a hit. He was also from Lubbock Texas and wrote this as well as "Oh Boy", another Holly hit.
Buddy Holly was killed at the age of twenty two 51 years ago today. Rest In Peace.

Redemption Song by Marley was brilliant in its own right, but then it was covered by Strummer:

There is also another version done by Cash and Strummer that is very strong, but this remake was Strummer at this best post-Clash.
