In the last 4-5 years Spain, England even Japan took over the US in women's soccer. Hence the big turnaround this year. Which is great. Spain was by far the best team at the last World Cup. All led by all-star Bonmati. The US does not have better players. The Canadian starting 11 is stronger and faster than the US starting 11.
Basketball, US football, track and field attract far more US male youth than soccer. Their larger population pool is reduced considerably by the many more lucrative options available to them. US professional male soccer will never be a strong force internationally.
The female team attract elite talent, which is why they are a powerhouse. Their forward lineup of Sophia Smith, Trinity Rodman, Jaedyn Shaw, Mallory Swanson is among the very best in the world. The rest of the team are all world beaters
However, the US remains the most dominant country in women's soccer. At the last World Cup, the Philippines won their first game ever. 90% of their players were playing in US universities.
The current US team is indeed very strong forward. The most gifted and talented player for me is Rose Lavelle. If she can control the midfield like Bonmati does for Spain, or Walsh for England, the US will win back the gold.
The new coach will also have to revert all the controversy picking Albert to positive results.
