HIV rates among circumcised men in South Africa higher than expected

a study has found that medically circumcised older men in Mpumalanga had a higher rate of HIV than uncircumcised men.

The findings appear to suggest that it needs to be communicated to both men and women that circumcision does not offer 100% protection against HIV.

The study, published in the PLOS ONE journal on August 1, was conducted by Indiana University professors Molly Rosenberg and Till Barnighausen from the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, together with professors Kathleen Kahn and Stephen Tollman from the Wits Rural Health in Transition and Agincourt Research Unit.

The researchers surveyed about 2,345 Mpumalanga men, who were 40 years and older.

the article constantly repeating the "Circumcision is a proven intervention that reduces the chance of contracting HIV by 60%" flawed African studies

women also produce smegma. why men the only ones attacked for it?

http://www.yourwholebody.org/smegma-101/

What is it NOT?
We know smegma usually has a negative connotation, but you can rest assured that it is NOT something dirty or unhealthy. In fact, you may find it interesting (we did!) that the term originates from the Greek word for soap!

What IS it?
Smegma is simply a combination of moisture and sloughed skin cells. While it is true that intact males do produce smegma, so do all women and men — even those who are circumcised!

In an intact male, smegma keeps the glans glossy and moist. Women likely see or feel smegma every day around their clitoris and labia, but may mistake it for vaginal discharge and pay it no thought. If not washed away, smegma may turn a creamy color and consistency and begin to accumulate underneath the foreskin or around the vulva. Both men and women can easily remove it with water during a bath or shower before it becomes noticeable.

I'm cut, and don't care since I don't remember it happening. Less maintenance for me anyway. No, I don't bear any psychological sequels, and certainly not PTSD.

Doctors used to say that cirmumcision of a baby is done without anesthesia because babies can't feel pain. A lot of people would like to disagree on that one. Just another one of these unsupported medical truisms.

If the issue against doing routine circumcision is the pain inflicted, why don't doctors performing the procedure just freeze the damn thing? Sounds like obtuseness to me. It would negate the argument about torturing children.

It's not the only issue or even the primary consideration. The issue is removing a part of male genitalia that apparently is the most sensitive portion and is as much as 12 square inches of tissue, altering a person's sexuality without their consent, usually forever.

You should watch the the NetFlix film mentioned by the OP. I learned a lot from it, for example I had no idea that the most sensitive part of a cut male is the remaining section where the foreskin was cut off, nor did I know that the frenulum is the most sensitive area and that guys can ejaculate merely by manipulating foreskin tissue alone, since that's where all the most nerves in male genitalia are located. They go thru everything from the physiology, to the history, to the stats/science behind claims of disease, and much more. The doc is over 2 hours long. Interestingly it didn't get into the industry behind selling foreskins for cosmetics, and it failed to mention that there sometimes are medically sound reasons for removal (e.g. inability to retract foreskin) even if rare.

The "pro-cut" folks in the video certainly come across as sketchy at best and evil at worst.

lol, ok, circ dicks don't have cottage cheese, :der: it's a wonder you even have one.
The insecurity of cut males is truly a sad phenomena. It's almost like they're jealous so they take every opportunity they can get to make dumb comments like that.

The foreskin is natural and I am glad I have mine. Made masturbation a lot easier when I was young. As I got older, I read about keeping the foreskin back to prevent the sweat, smell and smega. It took awhile but now I am same as any circumcised guy. The only issue was the sensitivity but that disappears after a few months.

So you walk around with your foreskin pulled back, why? This would just dry out the glans, which are designed to be covered and lubricated by the inner foreskin. It's like turning your mouth inside out and letting it dry out.

I am happily uncut and would never want to be otherwise. Contrary to often ridiculous claims foreskin offers protection not only from dirt, bacteria etc. but also from rubbing which I imagine occurs in cut men. The rubbing leads to loss of sensitivity which means cut men can never experience the same amount of pleasure. You just need to maintain it properly, wash, dry etc. I could see how cutting it off could be justified if you lived in a desert without clean water, towels etc. (which is where it came from) but see no value in it today. I read a few stories about people doing this procedure as adults only to regret it soon after (loss of sensitivity was the main issue). And as far as what ladies like better, well, if you are dating a lady who would not date you if you were opposite (cut or uncut), guess what, she's the wrong lady to date. As far as I know most of them don't even care; it is similar to how we don't really care about boob size when it comes to sex, and most of us dislike manmades, but the ladies believe that it matters a lot to have big boobs.

Had a MPA tell me that she hated seeing uncut guys because the majority of them had discusting smegma under the skin.

Why can't they use a general anesthesia ? As far as pleasing the woman, I guess a bit of lube would level the playing field , and in terms of the man's pleasure, the mind is the biggest factor .

As circumcision on a Jewish baby boy is usually done on the eighth day of the baby's life, I imagine general anaesthesia would be ill-advised.

However I don't see why the "mohel" (circumciser) can't use a topical anaesthetic such as novocaine to reduce the pain involved. I don't think the traditional drop of wine on the baby's lips quite does the job...

That's why foreskins should come with instructions. he probably wears his underpants outside his trousers.

Bacteria and dirt are not an issue with circumcised penis' because that area is now dry. It is not a mucous membrane anymore. Rubbing is not an issue. You imagine incorrectly.

One of the reasons for doing circumcision is that eventually, some adolescents and adults wind up with a foreskin that's too tight. In this case, being circumcised at that age is a much bigger deal than having it done as an infant.

80% of North American males have been circumcised. I don't see mass protests out there and class action suits.

The issue is raised by social justice warriors who have too much time on their hands, especially by persons who don't even have a penis to begin with.

I can well imagine an SP having to fellate someone they don't even like or find attractive, with the added aroma of camembert cheese wafting around.
