Although late night shows are increasingly a thing of the past, and even though they have cited financial reasons, cannot help think it is political.
Not a good sign if so.
Colbert should just go the route Conan O Brien has and most likely will.

Do Colbert and Kimmel have any schtick beyond 24/7 bashing of Trump? What a useless pair.
They are the voice of reason and sanity in a sea of lies and corruption, as America embraces fascism . Seth Myers is very good too. I gotta believe this is just Trump threatening to prevent the proposed merger unless his critic is silenced.

Yet they have made millions of dollars with their “useless schtick”, all while you’re making useless comments about them on an anonymous pooner board.

Well, Colbert now has license to say what he wants for the next year without fear of being cancelled.
Its a good year for that.

First reaction is Thank Fuck! Unfunniest cunt on TV. Embarrassing and painful to watch. Which is why I don't watch him. Good riddance. Although I agree with him on Trump. Which is his only schtick.

If it's true that Colbert's show was widely profitable, he will reappear on another venue very shortly.

The economics of the three legacy networks is different than other networks.

Highest rated show on a medium that nobody uses anymore?

Everything about the guy is fake beginning with the pronunciation of his last name.
Surprisingly, Gutfeld on Fox News outdraws all the late night hosts. I suspect viewers were tired of a steady diet of liberal politics on the three legacy networks. They decided to watch a show that openly espouses conservative politics but also makes them laugh.

I have caught "Gutfeld" a couple times. He and his panelists are pretty funny. He doesn't adhere to the standard format of a celebrity telling some silly, tired anecdote and then proceeding to promote their new project. I do kind of like the silly stuff Jimmy Fallon does with guests though.

It's also on at 10, isn't it?
That's probably a fairly important factor as well.

Part of the reason may be that Gutfeld has the conservative audience all to himself while the late night hosts split the non-conservative market.

Also a decent point, but I think what Wyatt was saying is aligned with that.

I totally agree but you are noting the phenomenon of the politicization of late night talk shows.

Many of us remember the late, great Johnny Carson was apolitical. Jay Leno was apolitical. Even Letterman was mostly apolitical. Letterman taking jabs at NBC owner and corporate behemoth GE didn't really ruffle the audience.

Politicization contributed somewhat to the fragmentation of the late night audience. The fact that there were three (four counting Gutfeld) talk shows on at 11:00 pm EST is probably a bigger factor. Perhaps that's why CBS wants to try something different.
