This is why Barton Street East needs to be gentrified then all will be good.

People living there are breathing in the equivalent of 1 cigarette a day.

I call bullshit on this study. (Or at least how the media reports it.) There’s already more than enough data freely available to track cancer rates/types of Hamilton residents versus other cities in Ontario. Either Hamiltonians get more cancer than other Ontario cities or not? Don’t give me academic speculation based on the air sniffers.

The study would have been actually useful if it correlated the concentration of suspected air carcinogens with actual cancer cases/fatalities among residents’ areas. All this study does is grossly paint Hamilton as a cesspool of potential cancer victims.

Maybe the true agenda of the study is more government regulations/restrictions on industry with the eventual goal of driving out more manufacturing jobs from Hamilton.

Bingo.

My aunt lived to be 90 living in Rosedale in the east end of Hamilton. She'd still be alive if the hospital she went to (Juravinski) didn't kill her.

The egg-heads not only would like to see a place like Hamilton shut right down, they'd also really love a dump truck full of money to back up to their door so as to be able to line their own pockets doing some useless study that no-one, I mean no-one, will even read, that speaks to their own political agenda.

Carcinogens in the air and raw sewage dumped in the harbour? I'll pass.

Does that mean we aren't still on for skinny dipping tonight?

SHOCKED. SHOCKED I TELL YOU!

No one saw that coming eh?

There is a very good reason McMaster has a world class cancer treatment school. They’ve been doing amazing research for 30 yrs there.

They have tried to clean up The Hammer. Its not easy.

Past metallurgical coke production needed for primary steelmaking, which once happened here, had a pretty good side product, call coal tar.
Coal tar was sold to process into all sorts of clothing dyes, among other things, but it was rich in benzenes, which are none too healthy for you. A bunch of it would just spill our out when way hot and just soak into the ground.

Then about 40 years past a big plastics recycling facility that burned for days that had all sorts of nasties as a by product. Destroyed the finish on a bunch of the fire fighting vehicles, so imagine how nice were all the bits that settled on the ground, and washed into the storm water.

There is a pile of toxic crap known to exist in the harbor, called Randall Reef.
When they tried to clean that up everyone on the barge over it got short term fast sick.

So all that combined with the mess the are the varied SewerGates, and it isn't too pretty.

Yes the upthread study may be flawed, but there are factors not good for you from past industrial activity.

There may be a very good reason that North End and and Keith areas have a distinct lack of nice housing.
If you can afford to you want to live further away from brown field or worse sites .
