About that 62% majority ... not that one, the other one:
62% ANGRY AT COALITION, 46% WOULD VOTE TORY
62% ANGRY AT COALITION, 46% WOULD VOTE TORY
The anger is specifically aimed at the Bloc, and the coalitions inclusion of the Bloc in that process. That is because Harper effectively played that nationalism card, scaring people about the Bloc and riling everyone up about separatists.BKool said:About that 62% majority ... not that one, the other one:

I have to say, I'd love to see this, it would make remarkable political theater with almost no real impact.....danmand said:Vivre Quebec libre!

It would have substantial economic impact though. There would be at LEAST a multi-year period in which investors completely lost confidence in the Canadian/Quebec economy while they waited to see how it would play out.onthebottom said:I have to say, I'd love to see this, it would make remarkable political theater with almost no real impact.....
The canadain credit rating would likely go up as the large amounts of money goping into Quebec would now be used in TROC, the dollar would probably drop temporarily and go back up.fuji said:It would have substantial economic impact though. I would expect to see the Canadian dollar in the toilet, the Canadian government lose its credit rating on its debt, the Canadian stock market severely thumped, and many Canadian businesses fail as the turmoil wreaked havoc on their business plans.

Most of the large business in Qubec would migrate elsewhere, notably all, the crown corps with head offices in Montreal and Quebec city, Bombardier would move out to maintain its airworthiness certification for its aircraft, the certification is canadain it does not transfer.
The Cree first nations would take all their territory out of Qubec and remain in Canada, thats most of Ruperts land, the rest would revert to canada as the Quebec boundaries act deeded the land in trust to Quebec to maintain for Canada.
BAsically the new country of Qubec would be a third world tin pot dictatorship for a while and then they would request admission either to teh states or Canada, possibly France .
In the long run maybe, but in the short run investors aren't going to chance their money on that being true. Short run there will be a mass sell-off of all things Canadian as people move their capital to countries that are not voting themselves out of existence.landscaper said:The canadain credit rating would likely go up as the large amounts of money goping into Quebec would now be used in TROC, the dollar would probably drop temporarily and go back up.
I also think that foreign businesses would migrate out of the rest of Canada as well. Nobody wants to do business in an uncertain political environment. Most of the large business in Qubec would migrate elsewhere
I actually think Quebec would do quite well as an independent country in the LONG run. In the short run they'd be really fucked, and in the short run we'd be pretty fucked as well.BAsically the new country of Qubec would be a third world tin pot dictatorship

I know I would move MY money the fuck out of Canada if there were a real chance of disintigration. I already have moved a lot out just for that very reason.

I agree it would be much worse for Quebec, but I would simply rather not be the "winner" in a race to the bottom.

As Keynes said in the long-run we're all dead--I would not want to have to wait for the long run before I could retire, so I will get my own money the fuck out of Canada if this stuff starts looking like a real possibility.
That is one of the real charms of this, right now you're being held up for ransom by an outspoken minority that's using the peculiarities of your system....train said:Never going to happen. Then no one would listen to them.

Obviously you've never been to Chicago (keep in mind I'm excluding the hockey team).train said:Yup
If they didn't have the best women, city and hockey team in North America they would have absolutely no redeeming qualities.
I have been to Chicago ( and Boston) and they are both top 5 but the open sexuality and party atmosphere in summer still gives Montreal the edge although the music in Chicago is fairly inspiring too.lookingforitallthetime said:Obviously you've never been to Chicago (keep in mind I'm excluding the hockey team).
Montreal is a great city and definately better than Toronto but there are better ones in NA.
Women is arguable but clearly the Montreal girls are very nice, city they don't even come in the top 5, hockey team.... who cares they couldn't even keep a baseball team - a better measure of a worthy city IMHOtrain said:Yup
