I love it. Teoscar and Ohtani seem to be pretty good friends. I haven’t seen it, but apparently there was some video that went viral where they were teaching each other their languages or something. Hernandez is such an amazing teammate. I think he has the best smile in MLB.

I posted that because I thought you'd notice Teoscar in the video!!

You don't get the idea that Rogers only cares about making money??????? Who knew you were new....

Yes, there is no upside to the Jays losing. There's also no financial upside in paying an extra $50 million to try to turn a fourth place team into a third place team, when that won't translate into additional ticket sales. In team sports, it's better to finish last than just out of the money, unless you are marketing hope instead of reality.

The casual fan who knows dick about baseball will overpay to see a team which might win a game on any given night. That same fan is going to find other things to do when winning the game today is essentially meaningless.

Cable TV is a dying business. Everything Rogers sells is overpriced and substandard in quality, and that applies to their sports teams.

Rogers has shown they want to and are trying to win. The proof of that is the Jays' payroll. It is among the tops in baseball and they are above the luxury tax threshold. You're right, they should't have to pay another 50 more. They are already spending enough to build a winning team and a solid farm system. I'm just speculating but I'd guess Rogers has increased the payroll 50% since AA was here and the Jays keep regressing. Rogers has not become a successful conglomerate by penny pinching. They are smart and know that a championship would bring in hundreds of millions of dollars. Their hopes of cashing in are being crushed.

Just in the AL East Baltimore and have teams capable of winning with less payroll than Toronto. Seattle and Cleveland and Minnesota spend less and have better teams

The fault is not with Rogers desire to win. The fault is that Shatkins have accomplished nothing with Rogers generosity. They are inept. I'm no fan of Rogers but I'll stand up for them here. It's Shatkins, not Rogers. Shatkins has to go after having just about 10 years to prove themselves but they keep striking out.

You believe that? Okay....

Spending a lot of money, and spending a lot of money WISELY are two different things.

The Jays' ability to compete is hampered by economics, (most of their revenue is in Canadian dollars, and most of their expenses in American), they have the disadvantage of playing on artificial turf, and they're not based in the USA.

Most free agents are age 30, +/- a couple of years. Playing on turf shortens careers. Older players consider that they might be costing themselves one last fat contract at the end of the road, if they sign here. Can you name a top tier free agent who has signed with Toronto for more than one year since Roger Clemens? I can't. It isn't enough for the Blue Jays to offer the same amount to free agents, they NEED to overpay. That's how they ended up with a second division roster, despite a high payroll: they're paying top dollar for second tier talent.

While Toronto is, statistically, a safer city than pretty much every American city, it's still a backwater town, as far as TV is concerned. They get less exposure on US TV, which means less fame, and the endorsement money which comes with being a household name. Tony Fernandez couldn't understand why he was paid so much less than Ozzie Smith, despite being similar in statistical performance. It had a lot to do with Ozzie being well known, even to people who don't follow baseball, and Tony's facial acne and religious fervour didn't help either, "Me, I turn double play for Jesus".

Vlad Guerrero isn't getting much endorsement money, because he can't, or won't, speak in English. Do you remember the TV ad with Lloyd Moseby and George Bell? George: "Gway pwomo, Loy, telus somo".

Jays are a little thin down on the farm as well. That folks is GM issue right there. Given the length of time Shapiro and Co. have been there I would say it's time for ownership to move if they fail to make the post season this year.

Strong outing by Gausman tonight though. If he can turn it around that would go a long way.

George Springer...
I disagree. I consider Springer to be a second tier player being paid top dollar. He has no trade value, unless the Jays would pay most of his salary to play somewhere else. His body is much older than his chronological age, very much due to the way he plays, like Kirk Gibson and Brett Lawrie.

When they signed him he was a top tier free agent. I mean how many teams couldn't he have started for? His post season stats were mind boggling before the Jays.

When the Toronto Blue Jays inked George Springer to a six-year, $150 million deal in January, they made a pact with one of baseball's most reliable outfielders.

Springer has accounted for 27.5 rWAR since his debut for the Houston Astros in 2014, which ranks fifth among all outfielders. He's also one of seven players to do better than a 125 OPS+ in at least six of the last seven seasons.

After Springer was revealed as one of the main beneficiaries of Houston's sign-stealing scandal in 2017, there were obvious questions about how he would perform in 2020. But so much for that. He posted a career-low strikeout rate and a new personal high for xwOBA on his way to typically excellent results.

Though Springer will likely move to right field within the next few seasons, for now there's every reason to believe he'll carry on as one of baseball's great center fielders.

No point in trying to convince his thought process that "they aren't trying win a a championship" is naive and foolish. He'll just keep playing the card about how they need to spend more money. Then when you prove to him that spending the most money has been a complete failure for most teams in the last 15 years, he'll come up with these weird scenarios about how the organization needs to spend 50 million more or how they need to spend more then that cause they pay in U.S but only get CA on the ROI...lol. Then he'll tell you that most fans don't have the baseball IQ to realizes this and will still show up to the games which is why Rogers doesn't feel the need to spend more money...lol. Okay, if that's the argument why spend any money at all?? You payroll can be as low as Tampa's you'll still win your 75 games or whatever. I'm sure he realizes this, EVERY OWNER IS IN THIS TO MAKE MONEY so if your going to play that card, it's still irrelevant because you can say that about every owner.

Roger Clemens and Teoscar Hernandez, are two of the greatest men breathing air on this earth. Those two, and all of our amazing TP clients. They are all the greatest ::)

I WAS posting here in 2007, Philip. I used the handle bobistheowl from July, 2003 to January, 2017.
Oh so we were both here at that time. Hey maybe you could help me find this thread where shack said “Roger Clemens digging down for something deep to get out of a jam was a very special thing to see…” I want to find it. Print it. And frame it.

A few weeks ago, I posted in some thread about wrestling from 2005 that I posted in back then as well, and I felt like a dinosaur.

Sentences like this are just making him look dumb and really starting to illustrate his lack of baseball IQ. He's now moved the goal posts again. He's not talking about when Jays signed Springer despite being one the best centre fielders in baseball over the 10 years. He's talking about his current performance.

This just in, WHEN WE SIGNED HIM HE WAS NOT A "SECOND TIER PLAYER".

rogers only cares about making money
they are opening 3 fine dining restaurants in the basement/100 level to be similar ala Scotiabank Arena, They're catering more towards the bay street/corporate/high roller crowd. They dont care about world series titles, they want the motion, the bay street money and to maximize revenue at the stadium.
Ownership has also spent money of the current roster. It's not their fault the GM made bad investments.

Springer WAS a top tier player when he played for the Astros, but he was a second tier player by the time he joined the Blue Jays.

Why? Because his all-out style of play takes a physical toll. He was an 'old 31' by the time Toronto acquired him. Perhaps that's why the Astros gave him a qualifying offer, but made no effort to resign him.

A 2004 Porsche Carrera with 5,000 kms on the odometer is a prestigious car to buy, previously owned. The same car with 500,000 kms? Not so much.

The Blue Jays have acquired quite a number of past their prime former stars...Troy Tulowitzki, R.A. Dickey, Hyun Jin Ryu... Do you remember Kirby Yates, a 2021 free agent signing who lasted two innings in spring training before needing Tommy John surgery? This is not a string of bad luck; these are a series of bad business decisions. There is, however, a team which has been making even worse decisions than the Jays...the Angels. This is what the Angels have been getting from Anthony Rendon, at $35 million per season:

Ideally, a team wants to pay its players based on how they will perform while in your uniform, not for their past accomplishments for someone else. Springer is sort of the baseball equivalent of the Leafs signing John Tavares. Tavares was a top tier player when the Leafs signed him, but it was wishful thinking to believe he would remain there for even half of his 7 year contract. Is what he does for the Leafs worth $11 Million per year, given the much lower NHL salary cap?

I can't help but wonder what the Jays would look like if AA was still in charge.

Just out of curiosity, what would happen if Roger Clemens walked through the doors of TP(assuming he hasn't already)?
