I would rather deal Grich than Gurriel or Teoscar.

OTOH, Teoscar too might regress at the plate and his fielding has always been inconsistent.
Agree. No way we should trade Gurriel. 3 more years at a combined 15 mill. Teoscar could also regress, that's true. Grich is better defensively, but Teoscar looked like something "clicked" at the plate, last year.

By MLB standards, 10 mill isn't too bad for what Grich provides. We can't keep one of the extra 3 outfielders for a DH as our DH spot full with Rowdy/Vlad.
I remember hearing a few complaints that the Jays were a bit too generous. I like the guy but of the 3 he's the one I'd give up easiest. At this point he's reaching journeyman status and is not likely to have a bust out year. Gurriel and Hernandez both seem to be on upward trajectories.

From Keith Law of The Athletic:

3. Toronto

The Blue Jays have boosted the talent in their system through all three avenues of player acquisition: They’ve drafted very well in the last two years, including landing the player I had at No. 1 on my board in 2020 in Austin Martin; they’ve found a slew of high-upside position players in international free agency; and they’ve done well acquiring prospects in trades, enough so that they’ve been able to flip the script and trade away some lower-tier guys in deals like the Taijuan Walker trade. The Jays placed six guys on my top 100, one on the just-missed list and have three or four more who would comfortably fit among the next 40 names.

I suspect they think they do not need another one or they would gotten one instead of who they did get
I have no inside info but I've heard otherwise. I think that they, like some other teams are playing a cat and mouse waiting game for with the next tier level of FA's. Once you get past the top tier FAs, it's a buyer's market.

I hear they are interested in Walker. Lost out on Paxton. I think Walker is a better fit as he seems to want to come back and play for the Jays.

Pitchers and managers approve of new, slightly deadened baseballs
The changes may result in fly balls traveling only one to two feet shorter when hit more than 375 feet, but if that pushes baseball one small step toward its more traditional roots, some think it would be one giant leap for Major League Baseball.
A Feb. 5 memo sent from MLB to general managers, assistant GMs and equipment managers outlined changes in official game balls that could reduce slugging slightly in 2021, following a six-year surge of home runs.

signing top tier pitcher for millions is foolish IMHO

they can very quickly become damaged goods as that goes with the position

sign a bunch of second tier pitchers and hope to catch lightning in a bottle

it is a crap shoot

No real arguments with your post. I'd just say that when you've already invested a lot of money, do you really want to engage in a crap shoot? Some may prefer to provide some insurance on their investment. No real answers, just different philosophies.
