Guess Gibby wants his A defensive team out there and that's why he's at first ahead of Colabello.

I thought Nova pitched really well for the Yankees and Stroman just one upped him.
If he can keep it going it's like the Jays have 2 ace pitchers going into the playoffs and he's got a fresh arm since his season is so new.
Add in Estrada. He has the 6th lowest qualifying ERA in the AL this year. If that doesn't make "Marc-000 000 000" an ace, what does?!

Brett Cecil deserves a mention.
His 8th inning performance tonight was very strong.

Cecil 1.0 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 2K 9-8 2.66 e.r.a.

Brett Cecil statistic:

On June 21st, his e.r.a. was 5.96

Since June 21st, 28 innings pitched, 38K 0.00 e.r.a.

That is a terrific 3 month run.

Smoak vs Colabello is Defence vs Offence.
I would rather start Colabello (esp. while Tulo is out) and then when we get the lead, we can bring in Smoak for D near end of game. Giving Smoak 4 AB in the middle of the order, we have been mired in some pretty close games since Tulo went down.

Smoak is also a switch hitter so he can pinch hit from either side if/when we need to pinch one of our light hitting middle infielders: Kawasaki, Pennington, Barney.

Great game! Stroman and Martin were huge tonight.

Without Tulo, we have a strong top 4 batters and then it's straight to the role players and defensive specialists. It would be nice to lengthen that battering order with Cola.

At the same time, it's tough to argue the success rate that Gibby has had against NYY this year. 4-2 in August and an even better 5-2 with our "slumping" team in September.

The bad news is Gibbons. Nice guy, but nice guys finish last! :frusty:

Perry
you've been knocking this guy for two years, and for two years, I've been trying to tell you and a bunch of other gibby haters, the guy is a fine manager. He's not perfect, but nobody is.

The more important point which I said all along, baseball more than any other sport has more to do with the talent as opposed to manager/ coach.

Jon Farrell went from first to last between 2013-2014 , now Gibby will go from 3rd to first, while orioles will go from first to last with there current manager.

People, stop focusing on managers, the players are the ones on the field.

Playoff rotation - How would you guys stack it?

I read an article (Blue Jays Banter ?) saying that the post season rotation should be Price / Stroman / Dickey. Have to disagree.

Estrada is one of the top ten starters in the AL. Dickey has been great, but is always prone to the long ball. And with RA, either the knuckler works well, or it doesn't. No Plan B.

I would set the rotation: Price / Estrada / Stroman and use Dickey and Buehrle as spot starters and long guys depending on the venue and the opposing line up.

Also teams with speedy runners can run rampant on the bases against Dickey's slow knuckler.

I have to go with Estrada as well.

And Buehrle will become the odd man out because I cant see him being an effective reliever during the playoffs

Nope, I would go with Price/Stro/Estrada.

Stroman's arm is fresh and well rested from his injury, he would IMO make an excellent 1-2 punch with Price

Buehrle has almost no chance of being on the post season roster. Neither does Hutchison.
If these guys are not starting pitchers they are not going to be in the bullpen.

For rotation right now I would go Price/Stroman/Estrada/Dickey although that could change depending on how season closes out.

For Buerhle to be on the post season roster one of the top 4 would have to go down with an injury either before the playoffs or during the playoffs which is a bit sad since he's a veteran nearing the end of his career.
Playoff rosters are usually a ruthless meritocracy with little weight given to sentiment or feelings.
That's the way it looks to me anyway.

So let us just agree to disagree? No need to grab at old posts to keep on repeating something that needs no repetition!

Again, we disagree.

Baseball is a team sport in which a very unique kind of team chemistry is needed. About 25 to 30 guys spend 7 to 8 months a year living in each other's face every day and their moods and mind sets are very contagious.

It is up to management and the coaches to monitor and manage the chemical process. With very rare exceptions, that is not something that a player is in position or able to do.

You are talking about physical abilities. I am talking about individual and group psychology.

Apples and oranges.

Get it?

I think Buehrle will be on roster but in a different role. 5 starters, but not all starting, cecil, osuna, lowe, sanchez, hendriks, then not sure-loup is a lefty who at times is good, tepera has been good lately, i think they will carry 12.

So now the question is do the Jays go with a 3/man rotation or a 4/man rotation???

I say go with 3 starters: Price/Stroman/Estrada and see how it works from there

My guess is that they will play it pretty conservatively with a 4 man rotation of Price/Stroman/Estrada/Dickey with Buehrle in there as a potential long-man in the bullpen and cover for the starting pitchers.

Certainly that applies to Hutch who is history as far as being in the 2015 post season. Buehrle is different. He has played very well, except for 1 bad recent start at Fenway when he was hurting. He would make most teams post season roster as a no-brainer and has only been ousted from ours by Stroman's recent stellar starts.

He's an older guy in his final season. The young guys all love him. He has respect in the club house. I think he has to be in the mix somehow.

And they can reset the roster before each series. So they can go short in the ALDS and then expand the pitching staff or change for the ALCS and WS.

You may not agree, but there was an absolute reason to bring up and old post. It's to prove how wrong your were. Your exact words were "nice guys finish last" and the "nice guy" who you claim the players didn't like, and weren't motivated by him, ect...is about to win the division and possibly the American league.

Those were your words, and mine were the opposite. If you think after a two year debate I'm not going to take the opportunity to point out the fallacy in your argument, your nuts. I'm going to take every opportunity I get.
