Blue Jays have a really bad record in 1 run ball games this year and I think most of it stems from weakness in the bullpen.
They don't seem to be getting the job done in high leverage situations recently.
A couple of weeks ago I heard Keith Law on TSN radio say that the bullpen is the Achilles heel of the Blue Jays team and it sure looks that way from the results of the past 6 games.
Sanchez especially is doing a Johnny Cueto impression recently by giving up so many hits and runs when he appears in games. Can't seem to get anybody out.
Set up guys for a million years in baseball have been expected to go more than 1 inning so the excuse that he can't be asked to pitch in 2 different innings doesn't really wash, especially since he was able to do it last year in the bullpen with no big issues.
This past week the Blue Jays lost 3 one run games. Losing pitchers were Sanchez, Osuna and Cecil.
Starting pitchers went 3 -0 while relievers this week went 0-3. (Estrada, Price and Stroman winning games.)
Playoff teams with a poor record in 1 run games in the regular season seldom do well in the post season.
Blue Jays outscored Atlanta and Boston by a total score of 31- 16 this past week in 6 games; but only go 3-3 because they can't win 1 run games.
Getting 7 innings out of a starter is also crucial. In the 3 wins this week the starters went 8.0, 7.0 and 7.0 innings.
In the 3 losses the starters went 5.0, 6.0 and 6.0 innings. That's 22 innings vs 17 innings by starting pitchers of winning games vs starting pitchers of losing games. Asking the bullpen to do an extra 5 innings of work looks like a recipe for loses.
Thank god Stroman is back because he looks like someone who can give you 7 innings every game.
