If you're willing to go outside the downtown core, there's a place in Etobicoke that's excellent. It's called Black Angus Steakhouse that's been around for decades in the Bloor and Islington area mid-way between Islington and Royal York subway stations. It's very tiny on the outside and if you blink you'll miss it if you're driving past. http://www.blackangussteakhouse.ca/ There is a parking lot right across the street though.
I was surprised at the quality of the steaks at Granite Brewery (Mt Pleasant and Eglinton- n/e corner). Very affordable, and an excellent selection of craft beers.

Without bragging, I believe I do the best steak period. I have been told this by many people who dine out often in top restaurants all over Toronto and the rest of North America. I agree with previous posts that its not that complicated. But I don't live in the core so I guess I don't qualify.
I also make the best martinis I have ever had.
What type of bbq do you use?

I buy the whole slab of meet and butcher it myself and cut them into fillet mingons.
According to the video you posted, the "only true fillet mignons" come from the very end (narrow end) and the head. The bulk of what you are calling fillet, he makes a differentiation and calls them beef tenderloin.

Although pricey, i stick to filet mignon/tenderloin only and always find the cuts much better and cooked to perfection at a steak house. Tenderloin from the store cooked in a pan at home isn't the same, even with good seasoning, and I'm not going to buy a barbecue to cook steak for myself a few times a year lol. :)
A decent barbeque doesn't really cost that much . I'll bet under $200 . Put it this way after paying a bundle for a new expensive dress that you might only wear a couple times a year what would be the difference if you did that with a barbeque . That barbeque is going to last longer then that dress would be in style .

I've walked by this place dozens of times. Always found it odd that a restaurant would be in the middle of a parking lot. Will have to try it sometime.
It actually has the best ambience of any of the steakhouses. Actually in Toronto I only liked the ambience at Sotto Sotto better, and that place burned down. Don't let the outside fool you, inside its very comfortable. I don't want to oversell it because they do a low key thing, cozy with a piano playing, but I find it the most enjoyable for the atmosphere.

All Steakhouses are a poor value when dining out. Steak is just about the easiest meal to prepare yourself. You can grill your own steak to your own exact liking, season it however you prefer, and enjoy a meal that is at least as good as you would have at a steakhouse, if not better. Quality steaks, even when custom cut and aged by your friendly local butcher, are not expensive.

On the other hand, many other foods either require real cooking talent, ingredients that are not widely available, or kitchen equipment that is higher end than a consumer could afford. That's when you are getting something special for your dining out dollar.

A steakhouse is somewhere you can take a client who has no real interest in food, or sense of exploration or discovery when it comes to dining, where you can still spend enough money on them to make them feel like you see them as important. It's a con.
EXACTLY.

I love exploring Toronto's restaurant scene. There are such a huge number of places which offer unique and one of a kind plates that I could never dream of making myself. (I'm not a good cook at all, but I can barbeque with the best of them.) Barbequing steak is dead ass simple. You just need the best raw material and a real charcoal fire and it's hard to go wrong.

Now ask me to duplicate Momofuku Shoto? I wouldn't know where to start.

BTW, on the advice of the Globe and Mail, and a hankering for Indian, I tried out "Tich" the other week. Best Indian Food I've ever had in my life. If you want a really great dining experience, in MIMICO even, at not too bad of a price. Check it out.

Here
The main difference between my own steaks and those of the best steakhouse restaurants is that I cannot get my BBQ as hot or hot enough to make a superb black and blue (Pittsburgh/Kansas City), which is the way I like my steaks... along with a great Carménère from Chile!

Otherwise, if I spend the money and buy top quality fillets or striploins - and that is very important! - my steaks are as good or better than most steakhouses.

One exception that I have noted several times when the subject has come before is House of Chan. Their meat is simply exceptional and always grilled to perfection...

I have asked many times where they get their meat but, to them, it is a closely guarded secret. The only thing I know is that it is shipped from Chicago.

I lost 20 lbs by making steak and eggs for breakfast every morning. Steaks were from Loblaws, expensive but worth it. Cooked in a cast iron skillet.

In terms of restaurants, there is only one - Barberians. Their wine list is almost overwhelming, but if you are brave you can say "I don't see X on the list, do you have a bottle?" You will get the *other* wine list, plus a tour of the cellar. But you have to know what you're asking for.

Otherwise, take your doxy to The Keg.

The Keg is horrible. Extremely overpriced and overrated. You can get way better steak at Ruth Chris or Hy's. I went to Keg once and never again. I would rather have a burger at Harveys then go to Keg.

How's the service, the food and most importantly the price at Tom Jones? Overpriced or priced just right?

I briefly dated a butcher - the relationship didn't turn out well but, damn, the meat he would bring back from work was superb! :)
So you're saying he was mainly because of the meat. Wasn't that the catch phrase of Dominion grocery stores back in the day? :)

The Keg downtown has one of the best patios in the city core and probably the best patio in the financial core. Awesome spot in the summer.

Harbour Sixty Steakhouse. :thumb: One word Expensive.
When Harbor Sixty first opened they were the bees knees. Excellent steak. Superb wine list. Desserts were off the charts. Great ambiance. Celebrity sightings all over. I swear I must have run into Bob Cole and family there at least 3 times. Gilmour, Clark, Domi, Kypreos, Carter, Mansbridge, Geddy Lee, Michael Ironside (cool dude). But around mid 2000's it started to go downhill and haven't been back since.

Tom Jones and Hy's I've found the most overrated. Ruth's Chris is alright but if you're not a fan of butter you won't like it. Went there with work colleagues one year and none of the women were impressed in the slightest.

I like Ponderosa. lol just kidding.

Tom Jones was pretty good. Barbarian is very good. I love Korean Grill House (I go 3 times a month)...but that doesn't qualify as a "steak House" by any means.
