If you don't like hip hop fine. If you think it isn't real music, ok that's your opinion. But I don't wanna hear it. If you can't contribute an intelligent answer get off the thread. Thank you.

If Hip Hop and/or Rap aren't music, then you can't class African or Aboriginal rythm's as music either.

People who REALLY know music, who have studied music, who have taken the trouble to UNDERSTAND different genre's know.

None are my taste, but all are most definitely music.

The most important thing for this thread is

dont make negative comments if you can't distinguish the difference between hip hop and rap.

Personally I still listen to stuff from the 90s and the odd album like stuff by brother ali or blue scholars, etc.

If someone can intelligently explain to me why they think hip hop and/or rap is not music, please tell me why. I thought music involves singing and/or the use of instruments that produce notes in a rhythmic fashion, that is pleasing to the ears and mind. Now if you don't like the musical genre that's cool, nobody is going to force to you appreciate it if you don't like it, but many, many people do enjoy the sounds produced in this musical art form, and that's really the point of what constitutes music or not.

So to those who don't think hip hop/rap isn't music, please give me an intelligent reason as to why they feel that way. I'm actually kind of curious to hear your responses.

I know sometimes that may be questionable (as in Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby, or anything from Justin Beiber), but sad as it may seem, they are musicians as well. The fact that you may want to shoot them out of a cannon is besides the point.

Exactly, there is a difference between the two.
I've always viewed Hip Hop as a jazzy version of Be Bop, Reggae and R&B that goes back to the 50s.
While Rap is more of what the Beatniks did back in the 50s in coffee houses, with their poetry readings, only today that poetry has a percussion backing with Rap.

Here's something from the 50s that is an early form of Hip Hop with some early Rap only done much better...;)

Between a rock and a hard place
When people start referring to hip hop as 'good old days' music, it makes me want to break out the Geritol.

Back Burner

In Protest! See Location!
Old man turns on TV and watches James Brown performing throws up his cane and says - Turn that crap off, that's not music, he's no Perry Como!

Old man watches TV watches The Beatles performing on Ed Sullivan and says, turn off the crap, that's not music. Where's Benny Goodman?

Old man turns on the radio and hears Metalica for the first time and says, what the hell is this? This isn't music, The Beatles now that was music. Puts his teeth back in.

Old man turns on TV and sees a Run DMC video and says, what the hell is this. This isn't music. Leonard Cohen is real music.

Old man turns on TV and hears Lil Wayne and says, what the hell is this. Run DMC that's real music.

One day I'll be an old man and a new genre of music will come on and I'll probably say, "hip hop was real music, turn this crap on, and where's my nurse. I need to be changed!

Rap/Hip Hop along with the commercial pop music of the past 25 years is just a part of the dumbing down of society during this time.

Hip Hop had a best era????????????????????
Similar to the old days of margerine when you had to break the little tab filled with yellow shit and squeeze the margerine bag for 30 minutes to mix it properly. Ohhh, how I pine for the good old days!

Yep, but he could write. Same with Neil Young, bizzare voice but great song writer. How many hip hop tracks will still be on radio 25 years from now?
