Anyone with an ounce of hockey sense will know you can not judge a player value 20 games into their rookie season.
Personally I suspect both will have great careers & the debate of which is better will still be a discussion long after both have retired

Matthews finally score a game winner and the Leafs win for the first time when Matthews scores a goal.
AWESOME!!! But the true number one has 4 this season and is doing better than the true #2.
Matthews is playing on a better team with a better coach. If Laine had that he would be about 4-5 points above where he is now. Laine is the true Number 1.
Matthews does have a better coach but not yet a better team and more important not yet better linemates. Laine plays more minutes and plays with a star on the rise in Mark Scheifele. Matthews has a good coach and good upper management (finally) and is being developed into an solid number one centre. In their first seasons Ovechkin had more points than Crosby...Crosby developed into a dominant number one centre who would captain his team to Stanley Cups and also fill up his trophy cabinet with gold medals.
Nobody can decide yet who will be the better player but the smart money says a dominant number one centre will be more valuable to his team and have a better career when measured in team success. I am sure Matthews will happily end his career with less goals than Laine if he wins more games and has a Stanley Cup or two...if actually leads the Leafs to a Cup ( a big if I agree) he will have a legendary status that no amount of goals from Laine will match.
Ahh yeah............
As of now TML are better than the jets. Score more goals and have more wins etc. They are better in every way.
Imagine Laine on the TML with Kadri, Bozak, Brown, JVR, Komorov??? He would be number 1 among all rookies by a long shot.

In the points standings.....but I was wrong about that since Laine is #1 . The true #1 , Laine, is actually #1 in the standings so I stand corrected. The true number one pick is performing as expected.
Now imagine if he had team mates such as JVR or Bozak or Marner or the hands of Nylander? Damn scary.Imagine if Laine had the benefit of a Fast mobile D? He would be easily at 25-30 points.

B) We Leafs, well me and I imagine other Leafs fans, wish we had Scheifele and you are saying the Leafs have better players then him just to make your argument.
That said the Leafs made the correct choice in Matthews first overall. They needed a true first line NHL center.
Your argument holds zero water. The true Number one, sans scheifele, won the game single handily. 2 points and that shot!!!!!! He will prove to be the true number 1. Currently tied with Crosby as goal leader!!!! Number one pick? Nah, number one over all at this pace.

Goals win games. Dominant number one centres (and defencemen) win championships. Anybody who has ever played hockey at anything close to a competitive level would happily trade a scoring title for a championship!
